This is for 16" - 19" M-B wheel sizes, lugs, offset's, and tire sizes for the R129.

Please feel free to take a look at the R129 picture gallery

Offset = ET = 25.4mm = 1"
Example: 9.5" rim w/ ET40 and a 9.5" w/ ET23 = -ET17mm/25.4mm= -0.67 inch inside of the wheel to the strut.

"The difference between the R14 and the R12 ball seats is the CURVATURE OF THE RADIUS OF THE BALL SEAT and that is DIFFERENT between 14M wheels and 12M wheels. Using an R12 ball seat lug bolt in an R14 ball seat wheel can lead to trouble." JPG courtesy of BW Forum Member Check Codes

I don't think there are any differences between what will fit a stock 1990 and a sport 2002 from the factory, 16 - 18 inches.

The questions come in when trying to use 19 & 20 inch wheels or wrong offsets, which seem to be the latest rash of questions from some of our 'younger' enthusiasts. :)

I do believe that a"129" wheel will fit ALL 129's, I think that we are looking for "spec's" for each wheel size 15" 16" 17" and 18" offset and width. Thanks!!
Paul, thanks for your help.

This is an example of the AMG Sport package.

245/40/18 front and 275/35/18 rear
8.5Jx18 front and 9.5Jx18 rear
ET25 front & ET23 rear
with a 5x112 mm lug pattern.

We've had problems with after market rims, when the lug bolt size was different than stock. Had to keep the proper size socket and breaker bar in the trunk as well. The stock lug bolt wrench would not fit in this case.

As the offset gets larger for a given rim size, the outside edge of the tire moves toward the center of the vehicle. This means that the axle (virtual) of a car needing a 40mm offset has a wider hub to hub width than a one needing a smaller offset. Find the link to 1010 tire in this thread and experiment with the offset sizes in the tire offset calculator.

Well....I was going to wait until the car was stored for the winter, to replace the front tires....

Then we blew a tire.

So, my problem is this:
My car has (had!) 235 40 18's
I see that they "should" be 245 40 18's.

I know that we aren't talking about a huge difference (roughly 1/2" in width), but what benefit is there to the larger tire on the front?

One other question. No one seems to talk about tire load rating here. I have seen 91 (1356lb) all the way up to 97 (1609lb). The Pilots on the front, were only 91's, and this concerns me. Does any one know what the proper rating should be.

PS. First time I have used an MB jack....wow! that was easier then my floor jack!

load carrying capacity of an SL

cthomson you should go with at least 95 load index tyres.
R129s are not light at all.
He's right. We actually need to talk about the 'load carrying capacity' of the SL and it should be >95. The topic is discussed at Load Index Chart. My 2000 SL500 has a curb weight of 4125 pounds.

Unusual sound with new rims and tires

All i did was just change my stock rims with some 18x8 ET31 amg monoblock aero IIs with tires that are size 245/45/zr18. Once i take sharp turns or u turns, i hear the front tires rubbing on the plactic part in front of the tires. are the tires too big? should i get 245/40? or 245/35?

Sorry for the late answer but I believe your problem is a combination of things. The AMG Aero II's come in a staggered size. So if you look at the table above you will find that the front wheels should be 245/40R18 OEM , 18x8.0 , ET31 and the rear wheels should be a 275/35R18 OEM , 18x9.0 , ET35. But if your car came with the same size tires all the way around it would be easy to put the wrong size rim on the front and not know it. But if you do have 275/35R18 on the rear then you should have 245/40R18 so that they fit and balance out each other.

Hi,

I got a set of AMG size 18 wheels with staggered width and ET44 offset. I would like to know if they will fit my R129 without spacers or should I use 10mm or 15 spacers because the original wheel offset is ET34?
Hi ceed,

Welcome to the forum. The original 16 inch wheels did come with ET34, the AMG Style 1 wheel option for the R129 had 8.5x18ET25 for the front and 9.5x18ET23 for the rear.

Check out this 19" AMG rim and the ET's.

245/35R19 opt. , 19x8.5 , ET25 (W219 AMG III)
275/30R19 opt. , 19x9.5 , ET28 (W219 AMG III)
I absolutely love the look of those wheels. They'd look amazing with my new brakes. And I trust lynns' word that they fit. :) If anyone sees a used set for sale, please shoot me a private message.

What about these, will they fit a R129? Come off a 1999 CLK55 AMG.

AMG Monoblock
Front: 225/45/17 ET35 (8.0x17)
Rear: 245/40/17 ET30 (8.5x17)
They should work as long as the tires load index is >95 and you get the right lug bolts.

quick lug-nut question

Greetings,

I just bought a set of AMG monoblock II rims from a forum member (I believe the offset is 31 front/35 rear, but I'm still awaiting their delivery--in any event they were the type made specifically for the 129).

Will I need a set of lug nuts different from those I am now using with the stock 8-hole rims?

Thanks a million...

You might, depending on wheel thickness... to get the Monoblocks on my SL600 required a set of 62mm bolts (the ones I was previously using were 25mm). LA Wheel and Tire has most MB bolts in stock and are very knowledgeable.

OOOORRRRR since you're in So Cal go see them!

#40 ·
well,my is 92 with amg sport package(wheels and bumpers)which was added to car later.reason I ask.stock it came with 225/55 all around and gas lid say 30/32.than it say +7 for warm and +4 for over 100mph.
I will try up/down.
Hmm. It looks like factory tire pressure recommendations vary from R129 to R129.
I guess alot has to do with the specific wheel package that came on the car.

#41 ·
When you change rims from 15-16 to 18 and tires from 55 to
40- 35 series you must put more air pressure in.
(Less side wall.)
So lynns factory recommendation is accurate for city driving.
If you find an autobahn in USA ( Faster then 100 ;) )
Then 39+ is recommended.
I do have 18s keep them at 39 psi.
One to two psi lost between check ups.
Pot holes in LA, I lost two good tires two years a go, same left side.
I am still pissed off. $$$$
Regards.
aam.

Hey Lynn, I just checked out that link, and am a little confused...

I looked up the wheels for my car and noticed an issue, and then I realized that all of the rest of their packages are also a little off, size-wise. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't my factory rims are 18 X 8.5" front and 18 X 9.5" rear? The set they have are 18 X 8" front and 18 X 9" rear.

And then if you look at the regular 1999-2002 rims, they are 18 X 8" all way around. I think those are honestly too skinny for a 4,000lb 300hp+ car. You can already breaking the rear end loose pretty easily, especially when cornering, and I wouldn't want to drop a full 1.5" worth of contact patch off each rear tire. That would not be good for handling, at all.

Can an expert tell me why these wont fit?

They will fit. If you take a look at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/3036558-post4.html you will see that I included the MB R230 Launch wheel because we have at least 5 forum members with them on their cars. You should talk with L.A Wheel there number is up the page and they will tell you exactly what you need and are willing to sell you the correct parts. This is something that they specialize in.
