Stefan,My Friend in Germany ,built his 6.9 SLC himself, what I was saying was ..AMG built eight cars with 6.9 engines PLUS 8 with 6.3 engines.
But firstly,a bit of idea of what was involved in this conversion.
First.AMG had their own bonnets( 'hood' to USA persons) which had a different profile.
So what Stefan and I decided was that the engine had to sit lower. The solution to this was to sit the front of the body on 2inch thick spacers ,between the body and front axle.
This meant that the engine centerline was now 2" below normal so the drive shaft had to have another universal instead of the flex disc.
At this point another problem arose; the adapter plate for the uni joint was too big to fit in the tunnel so a large hole had to be cut to fit it in.
Springs are stock at present but if you look at the pic of the engine you can see the suspension pump is still in place.
Stefan tells me he has an idea of fitting the hydro suspension from his donor 6.9 to the SLC. Not a complicated exercise ,but very time consuming. Self leveling is an option on the W107 but 6.9 's don't have springs ,just hydro .
struts....
As most of you know, the 6.9 is a dry sump engine which meant the oil tank needs to be located somewhere.
Stefan's approach was simple enough..cut the panel from the 6.9 and mount it in the same place on the 107. The finished result looks like it was designed by Daimler Benz. The oil filter has to be moved as it sticks out and would hit the radiator so he made his own remote mounts.
Now to the AMG story.
unlike a lot of AMG SL's one see's about (I have mate who has a W107 280SL AMG,) there were some
real performance cars built.Where do i get my info? through Stefan who has met and confered with the Very people who did the Work at Affalterbach!
First there was this..The sublime
A 350SLC with M-100 6.3 by AMG
Stefan tells me he knows this car ,it has survived because it spent over 20 years in storage. Not good for 6.3's..
And there was this...AMG 7.2 liter SLC.with 5 speed.... The ridiculous
Built for the boss of Dresder bank as a security device, the thinking being that if the Red brigade attempted to kidnap him his driver could out run them.
Note the unique injection setup to gain hood clearance.
I have,on my other system pictures of several 6.9 conversions underway at AMG .This was at a time when the company nearly folded when 18 orders for work were cancelled on one day,all because of rising fuel costs. Although Alfrest and melcher are still heavily involved in AMG,the company is a far cry from the tuner it was in those days.
