I know lots of member will have answers for this. The other day I was browsing sites to get an ideal on what the top speed is for w124 models that are stock from the motors to gearing to tires etc.

What I have found for a wagon with a 3.2liter motor is 140MPH

Is this correct and can many of you who own such vehicles like a wagn verify that.

I was like really 140mph in a wagon wow I gotta try that.

So a few days later I was on the freeway early in the am towards vegas and I wanted to test.

I took it up to 125 mph and it did it with no problems. Didn't even break a sweat getting there.

I ran out of room becauase there was some traffic and road work going on.

So can the wagon hit 140

depends on the engine size

click on the link above, find your engine size.
you shouldnt be going faster than 100mph on public roads. slow down and enjoy the ride before you get a ticket (easy revenue for your state)
states will be writing more tickets in order to make up lost revenue. its already happening on nys

In Illinois anything above 100mph is considered a criminal offense, a misdemeanor, not just a traffic violation.
Meaning ... more expensive lawyers, possibility of jail time and a few other inconveniences not to mention a deeper reach into the wallet.
None of this "$100 plus court costs" for 100+.
I once achieved 148 in the old 500E and there still was still a bunch of Rs left.
It's not the speed, it's the sensation of speed, my 49 MG TC was a whole lot more "interesting" at 70mph than any of my other more modern cars at 130+.
Maybe I'm getting old but there's something about keeping to the speed limit but yet knowing that with just a little push on that RH pedal you could see the other car getting smaller in your rear view mirror. The Bentley is perfect for that, and when you meet up at the next light just roll down your window and tell the other driver something like "you must get pretty good gas mileage with your car."

140's about right with the wagon. And I think it has a rev limiter to keep it from going faster. It's insane to think about going for that in anything other than a perfectly maintained vehicle in controlled conditions. None of us has the former and outside of a track or the salt flats, the latter doesn't exist. So keep it under a hundred, brother, and wave as you go past.

My wagon should be good for about 180, but it's a wee bit modified..

Stock, these cars are typically HP/drag limited...

These cars do feel Great @ 120 and up. Very much made for that sort of thing...just pick your spots;-)

I doubt that, I've been 185 mph on a sport bike that made 180hp
at the rear wheel.

For a car to go that fast you'd need major hp.

You need to list your engine/drivetrain mods with that claim.

I've had my 400E up to 130mph, and read claims that it will do 150 and I saw a video of one doing 155

I'm up above 4000 elevation so it hinders the performance some
anytime I go below 2000 it's like an added turbo boost :D

Might see what she'll do next time I'm at sea level.

And of course I've driven these speeds at odd hours when hardly anyone else is on the road. Well except when some kid thinks he has a fast import. lol
But then again, I've been driving since I was 9 years old so it's the same as breathing

Yea, it's a big risk
so trying to get on a local track may be a better option

I think pretty much everywhere if you're over 100mph they may think you either just robbed a bank, killed someone, or both. They might just take you out with a heat seeker.:rocketwhore:

My 1990 2.6 is drag limited to about 135. Couldn't get past that, despite Rs being left on the clock. But then again, it has a mighty 150hp and a 3.27 diff ratio.

The 94 E320 has a more manly 217hp, and while its seen 130 (and has stax of Rs left thanks to the (I think) 2.65 diff) it wears T rated tires so I didn't want to explore the upper reaches of its capability. Plus, my exit was coming up. There was definitely power to spare on that, acceleration was still happening.

And i've seen an indicated 105 in my BMW 2002. That was hairy.

I found this on Mercedes shop forum. I can see 155mph.

As I said, I know what it takes to break 180mph and have been
185 on a radar gun. I don't see a 124 wagon going 186 without
at least 500 or 600hp. If his wagon is making that, then OK.

. Car & Driver called it a “Mallet” wagon. There is much “historic” argument (if that’s not too strong a word to use) over whether the 6.0 engine is what is referred to as the Hammer engine (the M117 5.6 liter bored to 6.0), or is it only the 6.0 engine with the 32v head

I had just grabbed a coffee and I was doing my daily eBay search for ‘mercedes + wagon” and there it was. “1988/90 AMG Mercedes Benz 6.0 Wagon- 155 MPH” was the exact listing. I looked at the pictures and this car was an all black monotone with silver Monoblock wheels. Can’t be the same car I’m thinking when I see the sellers email address.

Again, do your Research, C&D, R&T plus Numerous German car magazines have had Hammers doing in excess of 180 MPH. The one C&D tested up to 186 wasn't even a 6.0 but a 5.6!

Also, the car you are quoting is a SOHC 6L.

I've had my SEL DOHC pegged @ 160 as I'm gearing limited w/ a 2.82 and it's CD sucks compared to the 124's that are body kit equipped.

Jonathan

went ahead and attached the C&D article, again this was a 5.6 w/ less HP and it still hit 178.

160 by the stock speedo???? Check it again with a GPS or good radar gun.

This is all I have found, claimed top speed & real world top
speed are two diffrent things. Post a C&D or R&T link where
they ran 180 plus & I'll agree.

Keep in mind I've been a Mercedes tech for over 25 years.
I'd love to believe a W124 AMG will pull 186mph.

Back in 1986 you could have had two examples of the Ferrari Testarossa for the price of one loaded AMG Hammer. Not that you'd be any faster at conveying four people in the two Italian cars. At the time, Ferrari quoted a top speed of about 180 mph for the Testarossa, but we're holding in our hands a piece of AMG letterhead stationery (complete with fax number; remember those?) that quotes a top speed for the Hammer of 190 mph. Actually, it says "over" 190 mph.

Your bike may have a smaller frontal area, but I believe its coefficient of drag is actually much worse than a cars. (Especially the W124 which has a phenomenal aero profile when you consider it debuted in 1984.)

This makes easier for a car to go much higher speeds than a bike. Even with greater area and lower hp/ lb. A bikes Cd approaches 1. The W124s is in the high .2Xs low .3Xs. Drag increases with the square of speed.

I'm well aware of the advantage cars have with CD numbers.
That wasn't my point.

My point is regardless of CD, the required hp to gain more top
speed grows more & more as you go faster.

IE: say it takes a 20hp increase to go from 150 to 160 in a 124 coupe.

To go from 160 to 170 could take 35 to 40 hp.

Both gains were 10mph increases.

It's the same for cars or bikes.

As per the AMG technical guide, W124 sedans had a CD of .25, the coupe even lower. Chatting w/ Hartmut he spoke about adding undercarraige trays to drop the CD even further.

I've attached the article from Mercedes Enthusiast, where they confirm 182 w/ a 2.24. I'll eventually find the article here in the shop w/ 186 MPH run.

Not sure of the CD on a 500E...I'm sure specs are out there.

Here is a scan from AMG's technical guide RE the Hammer's capabilities...the beauty of German figures was they were prone to quoting Worst case scenarios...
Quite the contrast from some other foreign and domestic manufactures...!

Jonathan, I appreciate you posting all this data, but I'd like to see real current
data like the bsmuwk posted about his very fast 92 sportline coupe.

#33 · (Edited)
151 GPS confirmed MPH and then it cut out in my 92 coupe. sportline, 225/50 tires, 3.07 final drive.

mercedes figures say 149mph is top speed for my coupe, so I was pretty spot on there. took forever to get there though. 217hp isn't a lot of power to get where you want to go in a hurry. i love that 26 mile stretch of straight road with nothing but empty corn fields on either side. :)

Thank you, that's the kind of real world data I'm looking
for. The manufacturer's were known to give the magazines
"ringer" cars to test. Back before they all had chassis dyno's
to verify hp. Now they can compare what they get to another
"off the street" car to compare.

#37 ·
That's cool, I'm happy with how my cars perform, I don't drive w/ GPS so sadly I won't be able to make you happy.

Ringers are for the Ford/Chevy guys... the cars these Magazines were testing 9 times out of 10 were customer cars that had already been deliverd and then borrowed for the article.

If you come up for Starfest you can try to keep up....;-)

That Al Bundy "Grey Poupon" bit is hilarious.
I especially like that in the background of the scene you can clearly see a movie poster for Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. Happy Groundhog Day tomorrow, everyone.
Thanks for posting that, ChevyBenz.

And, Clarkz, from one two-wheeler to another: keep the shiny side up.
