Tech who showed me the requirement info was able to search WIS specifically for my car, by VIN and he got 75W-85 Specs sheet for answer with all different companies, which are making it and are approved for use by MB.
I am not sure, but I think that MB 75W-85 will have to come from Germany. Price plus time for delivery probably prompted MBUSA to recommend Valvoline for replacement.
 
I will enter my 2005 VIN on Friday and see what I get.

I was just using the 2003 E500 for the car info. The tech has WIS online. Mine is not so
not sure what I will come up with.
I did have this stashed from the forums here. However like Drivbiwire I know
mine had 85w95 from a test. There was no record in the VMI of the diffs having
been serviced.
I honestly think MB did not put it all diffs.

This thread cracks me up! I just pulled the diff cover off my kids 84 300D to put new axles in and the 258K fluid looked new with no metallic visable. If you don't have a limited slip with clutch packs the fluid doesn't get dirty.

The stuff that came out of my ML was black.

I had a shop do the 1990 300E so I never saw it, but if was bad they would have let me know.

My 4matic W211 VIN comes back with the 85w90 in WIS so I am going to get a VIN from Autotrader for a 2005 E500 RWD and enter it into WIS.

Oil can shear out of grade and have absolutely no change in terms of color or clarity.

As a rule of thumb gear oil in low stress applications will last about 100K. Higher stress applications such as MB (Diesels, V8's, AMG, SUV etc) will shear much quicker, hence my recomendation for changing the 85w90 every 30K with the transmission fluid. I consider it cheap insurance for the $40 it costs to service.

It is official!!!

Since people would not collaborate or do not want to admit their mistakes, I went back to the dealer and got copy of BB00.40-P-0235-07A bulletin.

According to latest WIS, for the people not familiar with, this is a Workshop Info System or Workshop bible. When repair is done they follow it and after this if something goes wrong Mercedes pays the bill.

85W-90 (A001 989 17 03) is history after the remaining stocks are used. It is recommended only for earlier trucks model W163 (ML), not so sure up to what year.

I am attaching PDF file from WIS.

For those who do not trust me I will recommend going to MB dealer and asking for gear oil applicable for their car according to latest WIS bulletin and then come back and argue.

LOL, my wife would kill me. She does like the W166, but I am not sold.

She would consider a 2009 Cayenne Turbo S if she has to go with a unibody construction.
Or if they would do a diesel GLK in the US we would be into one of those.

GLK is coming w/2.2 CDI in 2014 I think; W166 will have "ON/OFF Road" package next year w/2 speed transfer case and six transmission settings. In terms of "hardware", the ON&OFFROAD package comprises an underride guard, a two-stage transfer case with reduction gear, a longitudinal differential lock and enhanced AIRMATIC functionality that allows a maximum ground clearance of 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres. I hope that they will certify 250 CDI for USA, it has output like 3.2 CDI.

Thanks for the fill volume. No big deal, I'll probably run it for a little while, and flush it with the right stuff soon. It was fairly dirty oil that I took out of it, and the fill and drain plugs had a blackish coating on them so it could use a sacrificial flush anyhow.
 
Depend which Mobil 1 we are talking about, Delvac is approved and is on 235.8.
Thanks for the info. Mobil 1 Delvac 75W90 is approved and Mobil 1 LS 75W90 is not included in the list. On Mobil 1 website,

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS is specifically designed for limited slip differentials. It contains a nominal amount of friction modifier to satisfy the needs of many applications. Mobil Delvac Synthetic Gear Oil 75W90 is not a limited slip gear oil.
Ok. I have to use limited slip gear oil for limited slip differentials since they are very sensitive. But I'm not sure why I can't use limited slip gear oil for conventional differentials.

Unfortunately, some additives in Mobil 1 LS 75W90 can be very aggressive toward “yellow metals “and are generally not recommended where copper, brass and bronze components are used.
E-Class differential doesn't use any yellow metal. Right? In Mobil product guide,

Mobil 1 Delvac 75W90: Fully synthetic, extreme pressure, multipurpose gear lubricants recommended for the lubrication of hypoid differentials, final drives, manual transmissions and transfer cases.
• Excellent lubrication under extreme conditions with easy gear shifting.
• Significantly reduces transmission and differential temperatures.
• Very low pour point, very high viscosity index and shear stability.
• Excellent thermal and oxidation stability.
• Rust and corrosion protection and antifoam properties.
• High load carrying capability and fully compatible with mineral oils.

• Approved against Mack GO-J Plus, MAN 342 Typ M2, MB 235.8 and ZF-Te-ML 05B/12B/16F/17B/19c.

Mobil 1 LS 75W90: A synthetic extreme pressure lubricant used where heavy duty gear protection and high load carrying performance is required in limited slip and conventional differentials.
• Outperforms all conventional gear lubricants with Indy 500-certified performance.
• Minimises wear and spalling in racing and high performance cars.
• Maximum resistance to breakdown from heat and extended high speed.
• Excellent limited slip performance and extended service life.
• Meets API GL-5.
LS 75W90 may be used for conventional differentials but I'm still in doubt if I can use it or not. :crybaby2:
 
Get Delvac, although MB dealer offers Valvoline SynPower 75W90 (also not approved) or original Fuchs fluid 75W85 at cost close to 60$ after taxes plus you have to wait (special order). I am using Mobil1 for close to 30000 miles and do not have any problems. However, MB recommends that hypoid gear oils must at least correspond to the US military specification MIL>L>2105 B/C/D and must be classed GL-5 in the quality grade according to API (American Institute of Petroleum) sheet 231.0, which requirement is met by Delvac:

• Mobil Delvac Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90 is intended for initial fill, topping-off or refilling differentials, final drives, transfer cases and other gear applications where lubricants meeting MIL-PRF-2105E, API Service GL-5, EP gear lubricants are recommended.
