Please forgive my ignorance but would someone tell me what the "W" stands for (as in W211)?

I tried searching the forum but recieved a response that "W" was too short of a term to search for. Thanks! :surrender:

Talking about mistery, the sedan is commonly referred to as E350W, and the wagon as E350S. Same W/S rule applies to all mercedes models. I guess that someone with dislexia used to work at mercedes!

It may sound odd to American or even Canadian people but the main language at MB is German and these letters do not sound confusing at all if you take that into account.

These letters have been explained a few times at the forum, old posts would explain all (at least most) of these letters.

W124 = normal 4-door sedan
V124 = extended wheelbase sedan
C124 = 2dr coupe
S124 = station wagon (estate)

R230 = roadster (SL and SLK)

X204 = 4WD SUV (GLK)

W means four door sedan, but this is only in recent times, as the rest didn't really come into use until the 1980s for the most part.

Hello to everyone world-wide on this site. I am impressed at the knowledge (and especially the "nice" way some treat the dummies amongst us who ask questions already on this site). I have only just come to Mercedes; 1 1/2 years ago bought a lovely little C200 sports and this has generated to my partner. Now I am buying an S320 (2001)-my absolute dream car (yes so many of you will tut-tut at this, but it has every conceivable option available. I pick it up in Sydney (Australia) and will drive it 4300kms across the Nullabor Plain to my (new) home town near Perth in Western Australia. I loathe snobbishness, but have found absolutely NIL on this site. I am looking forward to seeing how she operates outside the 'big smoke' as we call the cities. I feel sure I will need some 'nerdy news' from some of you about my new acquisition. What a road trip- eat your heart out Thelma and Louise and of course Chevvy Chase. I will post how my trip went for any who are in the least bit interested....and to those who are not of course!!. Thank you again for this forum....I wonder if Datsun 120Y owners have a similar forum??.
