Hi All! First, I want to say thank you in advance for any help you can provide, I'm a total beginner with vintage mercedes, but I'm excited to learn!

I've recently bought an W108 (1968 280S) and it is my first ever vintage mercedes, so I am not sure how many of the systems work. I want to troubleshoot and diagnose my climate control system, but I'm not sure exactly what would work under certain conditions. Let me explain...

The 4 slide knobs in the dash are all broken. I know I eventually need to fix this, but for now I want to understand WHAT my climate system will do if these slides are in set spots. I want to see if I can get my A/C system to turn on. As it sits now, I can rotate the two knobs in between my air vents, but the blower motor wont turn on. My question is: do I need the 4 slide knobs in a specific position for the A/C blower to turn on? Also, does the car have to be running for the AC blower to turn on, or can it simply be in the "on" position?

Second, how do I determine if my heater blower works? Where do the slide knobs need to be in order for the heater blower to operate? I've heard that replacing the heater blower is one of the most challenging jobs on this car. With the amount of time I have (somewhat limited) I'm not sure this would be a project I would embark on now. However, it would be nice to know how to check if the heater blower works.

Third, since I cant get my AC blower to turn on, I've checked the fuse that sits in the engine bay close to the firewall. This fuse seems to be in good shape, but does this fuse control the compressor, or do it control the blower motor?

Again, thank you all so much for your help! You all are fantastic and I cant wait to learn more about this beautiful car!

It sounds like you are aware that the AC and heater blower fans are separate. I know that my 1973 Ac fan will run with just the under-dash knobs. It is possible these electronic controls have corroded up a bit and with some use their contact may start working again. I don’t know. Finding fuses on the w108 has proven a bit of a scavenger hunt for me too. I’m lucky my sliders are in good shape, but that doesn’t make my heater fan work either. My car is in storage. I will follow this thread.

The AC controls are totally separate from the heater/defrost. They do not rely on each other.

For the heater blower, the top left lever controls this fan. As you move this lever to the left, the inlet fresh air damper will open, then the heater blower will turn on low, medium then high. I would start with pulling the trim on the cowl behind the hood and making sure there is nothing preventing the squirrel cage blower from turning. Lots of times, leaves will work their way in there and stop it from turning. Yes....it is a pain to replace. If you in fact do need to replace it, do so prior to working on your AC as the evaporator has to come out to do the blower motor.

The AC blower motor switch is notorious for failing. It is a ceramic switch with a spiral resistor in it. This, in theory, provides infinitely adjustable blower speed. In reality, the ceramic breaks and you have no blower. I would pull that switch and check for power at the back of it. If you have power to it but the switch is not sending power to the blower, there are some aftermarket 4 way switches (off, low, medium, high) you can replace it with. The original switch is unobtanium.
