Hello,

I recently inherited my dads W163 ML 320 from 1999:
The SRS/Air bag lamps wont turn on during start up. Seems like the opposite problem most people have.

I hooked up an OBDII-reader (iCarsoft MB II) and got the following codes from the air bag module:

B1153-00 - "Child seat / DTC Status: Fault indicator lamp on"
B1153-15 - "Airbag off malfunction indicator lamp discontinuity / DTC Status: Fault indicator lamp on"
P020200
P02026e
P00026e
P0258C0
B1476-00 - "SRS airbag malfunction indicator lamp A1e15 discontinuity / DTC Status: Fault indicator lamp on"
B1476-01 - "SRS airbag malfunction indicator lamp A1e15 short circuit / DTC Status: Fault indicator lamp on"
P000200
P00026e
P025800
P0258D0

The first thing I tried was changing the battery and checking all fuses. After reviewing electric diagrams it seems like the a1e15 light is connected through fuse f16? Ive attached the pdf. This model havent got the aux fuse box underneath the passenger side, just 1 main box.

I removed the dashboard and changed the lights into bulbs I knew worked.

I have looked at the rat nest underneath the fuse box and checked where the air bag module is, but havent seen anything out of place (as in loose or damaged wires)

So:

I took the car to the local merc dealer, but they advised me it would be more expensive than the cars value to even diagnose the problems.
Not sure where to look for the errors and would greatly appreciate any pointers what to do. Im not that great with cars but would love to learn.

SRS control module is mounted on the side of transmission tunnel just in front of the shifter.

Most likely wire from SRS to A1e15 was severed deliberately to hide existing problem.

Wiring diagram you have attached is for newer vehicle.

Thanks, sorry for mixing up diagrams. It apparently is a 2001 according to the VIN. Sounds like someone creative worked on the car earlier eh?

The VIN is WDC1631541X705666. Looks like that makes it a 2001 model? I guess the I cant read, the docs are wrong or some combination :).
Ill check out fuse #10 and the respective components, thanks!

@43sqd: The VIN's 10th digit only indicates the model year on USA VINs. For other countries, they are not required to designate a "model year". Instead, they have often use "plate year" which is the first year of registration, and is not always correlated even to date of manufacture.

@Witek: The "809" code just means "year of manufacture", which isn't the same as USA model year. For exampl, my MY2007 CLK had code 806, as it was built in 2006 as a MY2007. Same for my MY2011 SL - it has code 800 (and there were no MY2010 SL's - they skipped it for some reason).

The best thing to do is refer to the WIS documents according to manufacture date.

Question to OP. Let's say we figure out why SRS and Airbag_Off lights do not work.

Looking at codes problem is with right seat occupation sensor/child seat recognition. Are you willing to fix it? Is it still available?

Yeah, my intention is to fix the underlying issue. Ive only checked for frayed/damaged wires under the seat so far, looks like there is still a sensor there and no apparent damage. I figured that the short of the light should be fixed first so I can get some feedback when tackling the underlying problem.

After the help Ive gotten so far, the plan for the coming days is to use diagrams for a -99 car and see if someone messed with any cables from the airbag module.

Hello everyone,I hope you're all well.

I have some silmilar problem with my ml430 1999 airbag system.Maybe someone can help me!!

It has been a little while the SRS light is on the dashboard.AIRBAG OFF light is off.

When I turn on the car the lights are both on, after 4 seconds AIRBAG OFF light goes off.

It has been diagnosed a faulty child mat sensor by a mechanic the first time.

I've bought an emulator from Poland, which didn't seem working as the light was still on even after I took the car back to the mechanic to erase the fault code.

I removed the seat mat from the seat and replace it with a used one which I bought from a car wrecker.
Did not work as the car was a 2001 mine is 1999 model.

Then after a little time I have decided to give it another try and I bought an other emulator, this time from England.Obviously even this one didn't work.
When I plugged it in also the AIRBAG OFF light came on, then both lights go off for less than a minute and alternatively on and off just like a cycle.

In the meanwhile I got few more diagnose with the result of the following codes: B1153-- B1152--
I bought a diagnostic tool (icarsoft pro) which gave me the code: B1524 airbag ignition circuit driver

Is it possible that the last emulator I installed it works okay but there is another problem in the circuit?
Does anyone know exactly what code is B1524?
Could be the clock spring?

Thank you guys!!!!
