Interesting links for the 107

In the year and a half that I have been consumed by this car, I have amassed a large store of links to products that I needed (or thought I needed). There are also a lot of general interest "maybe in the future" sites that I have bookmarked. I bet most people here have done likewise. I can't say the business at the other end is honest, reputable, still in existence or otherwise but you may see a link of interest and follow it to the purchase of just the part you've been looking for.

In that spirit, I will start this thread with one that seems to consume quite a bit of discussion here.

Manuals for 107 Models

Feel free to add your own interesting links.

For the electrical section, to address the cruise control system , a link to JamesDean’s excellent website would be a good addition. He has a thorough diagnostic procedure for both the CC amplifier and the actuator. He also offers repair/restoration service for the the instrument cluster and climate control.

Thanks

1984 R107, 500SL

Hi,

I am a newbee, to this forum so hello to you all.

I have after 10 years of dreaming of a R107 i have managed just the other wek to get hold of one! Hard work searching through the ads, but job done.

I wanded to if I can put on a 15" alloy from a mercedes 190E, the flat faced alloy as I really like the look of them. Will there be any "offset" issues?

Can someone help?

Regards,

You are totally in the wrong thread here, but anyway, welcome.

No the offset will be too high.

Although if you are referring to the 15 hole alloys, they do come in lower offsets, as used on some 107's and on some 126's.

Jack point rust repair.

I think that there are four things that you need to get the rocker panels done properly:

4 of 107-637-00-13 - Washer, Jack Hole
4 of 107-610-00-31 - Tube, Jackport, SL
3 of 107-610-03-31 - Jackport, Right Front and Both Rear SLC ONLY
1 of 107-610-05-31 Jackport, Front, Left SLC ONLY

Go to the 107 Catalog, look under the "Body Panels" and "Frame and Floors" folders.

So my little McGuyver fix on my back carpet worked out pretty much like Scott predicted. You may recall that I installed a shaped piece of metal over the edge of the soft top well to hold the carpet tight to the wall. I somewhat followed Scott's advice and covered the sharp edges of the metal that could come in contact with the canvas top with several layers of electrical tape.

You can see where this is going, can't you? That's right. I put the top up one day and the heat had caused the tape to droop and expose the metal edge.

Result? A 1 inch tear in the canvas. Now on a scale of 1to 10, my top is maybe a 6 and probably a 5 so I wasn't devastated. I went to JoAnn's, a local fabric outlet and bought a tube of Tearmender for Denim.

TEARMENDER - Product Line

I didn't know about the "Tentmender" or I would have searched for it. Meanwhile...

I just applied it this morning and then went out an hour ago and put an extra layer on, all from inside the car. The stuff dries clear and is supposed to be weatherproof, permanent and flexible. We'll see.

The tear is sealed and barely noticeable from the outside. I'll update how well it holds up but for now, it appears to be fixed and the inside looks like a small grease spot.

I can live with that for now.

Subframe Warranty Repair Info

Board member ABQ450SLC persevered and was reimbursed by MBUSA for subframe repairs to his car. He generously offers his assistance to others who may need assistance. Contact him via PM.

ABQ450SLC said:
All, I just recieved a check from MB for the entire work done on my 78 107 gray market. Initially MB balked at the gray market, but after many, many calls they relented and admitted that the recall was indeed a worldwide recall, and the work needs to be done no matter where the car is originally from. At first they said no way, so I had the work done independently to a cost of roughly $2500. Then out of the blue MB USA called me back. Apparently someone higher up saw the request and they told me they would cover it. I told them it was already done and they had me take the car to my local MB dealer to have it inspected. They approved the work and MB made good on their word. They paid ALL parts AND labor. It did take a lot of work, but they did relent in the end. They said this recall would never expire and they had to honor it world-wide as it is a very liable fault in design. PM me if you want names, number etc.

Member Anovak has also offered help after successfully lobbying MBUSA and getting warranty repairs on his 107.

Anovak said:
Greetings and sorry for the delay. I had my subframe replaced at MB of Albuquerque, NM. It was a long, drawn-out process but they finally agreed to do it after I had contacted MB in Fellbach, Germany. Check your email. I will send the info you request there. The subject line will say "MB Subframe."

The good news is, contrary to what some have said, the recall DOES apply to the 107 models which includes the 380SL.....guess it just depends on how determined you are. Since yours is cracked already, I would think MB would want to take care of this immediately to avoid failure and therefore almost certain injury. Needless to say, I would not drive that vehicle before the subframe is sound. Best of luck to you.

PS - Nobby, very cool boots.....where can I get a pair like that, only could you be sure that I get the euro headlight???

Interesting observation in that both are from New Mexico.....

Because this might come in handy some day...

I know the question keeps coming up over and over again both here and in the Tire Rack wheel and tyre section so I thought I'd add a few pics. If any one has other wheel sizes post them up and say what works.

86-89 SL can run 15 or 16 inch rims easily. The problem is basically when you have increased width.

15x7 or 16x7 accepts an offset of Et23-Et25.

86-89 update SL's with 16x8's need an offset of Et11 on the rear and an offset of Et23 to clear the 4 pot calipers on the front . They can also run 16x8 Et23-25 all round.
Earlier pre-86 update SL's can run an offset of Et11 all round.

16x9's Et10's won't fit because they will hit the external guard:( Although I'm told an offset of Et18 will fit.
