Hi all,
Before i start asking away i would like to thank the creators of this
forum and all the other gurus here for providing very useful info.
Great job guys!!

Now on to my question, I'll be changing the transmission fluid and filter (97 E320 722.6 5spd transmission) and had a couple of questions.

According to what i've learned from the stickies here is what i am planing to do. Pls correct me if i am wrong or if i miss something.

1- Go to MB dealership and get 6 liters of ATF fluid, filter, and gasket.
Should i stick with the new ATF which is designed for the new 7spd transmissions or the old one which was originally used in my car? Are there any differences/advantages other then price?

2- Follow the instructions under sticky to change the oil/filter/gasket.
Should i replace the magnet inside or just give it a good clean? i'd like to replace it while i am in there so just wondering if i can get that from MB?
And also is the magnet snap on like the filter or do i need to do something special to take out the old one and install the new one?

3- Now as far the the torque converter drain switch goes.. i am a little confused about it. i couldn't find it so i am wondering if i should leave it alone and just drain/change the oil in the pan or is it a must do? I hate doing half-ass jobs so i would really like to do it if it's a must. Can someone please post a better pic of where exectally it's at and what do i need to do step by step. Thanks in Advance

Guys pls forgive my ignorance i did read through the stickies (which help a lot) but i just wanna be 100 % sure about what i am doing since i've never worked on a benz before.

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers

regarding fluid, most of the dealers don't carry the 236.10 fluid anymore, so most likely all you will find from the dealer is the newer 236.14 fluid. i used the 236.14 fluid last time i changed the fluid 2 winters ago, so far so good at 206k miles. i didn't notice any difference at all with 236.14 fluid compared to older 236.10 fluid. i have noticed a few members advice to get the older 236.10 fluid, so i think online would be easier place to get it. there are also few other fluid brands that claim to meet 236.10 spec like amsoil atf, redline d4, febi, meyle, maxlife, petro-canada duradrive etc, but mb hasn't approved any of them officially. personally i would use the cheapest of any of them without worrying at all. also i used almost 7 bottles of fluid when i changed my fluid from both the pan and torque converter, so don't get only 6 bottles but get at least 7.
regarding magnet, you might not have a magnet so buy one if you want. also clean the pan really good with some brake cleaner. also buy a can of aerosol cleaning duster ($3-5 from any office store or wal-mart) and blow off everything from pan before installing it back, this way you don't introduce any foreign dirt or particles to the tranny.
regarding draining torque converter, look at the diy's in the sticky section from g-amg. you will only get around 3-4qts out of the pan, so most of the old fluid is still there. by draining the torque converter you will get another 3-4qts out. there is a reason mb put a drain plug in the tc.
all you will need is 7-8qts fluid, filter kit with pan gasket, drain plug washer, tc drain plug washer, magnet (optional), good beer:thumbsup:
good luck and let us know what fluid you used and the outcome.

Thanks a lot for the replies and pics guys, it's a great help. So would i be able to buy the magnet at MB dealership or is that something i have to order online? and i am assuming it's a snap on or clip on so it'll be easy to replace?

As for the fluid i think i'll stick with 8 liters of 236.14 as it will make me sleep good at night ;-). i'll be doing the work this w/e and will take pics for you guys and report back. in the main time if someone can pls fill me in on the magnet.

Thanks,

Cheers

another thing to keep in mind is the pressure regulator valve spring, if you haven't read on it on the stickies you probably should. it's a very cheap spring and since you are changing the fluid it's good insurance to check or replace this. g-amg has great diy on the tranny stickies page. below is a place you can order the spring, also you can order a magnet from them also. The magnet is ummm magnetic, so it sticks to the bottom of the pan. No clips, no slots, just stick it in there. If yours has one, just clean it up and reuse it. You can also use a large screwdriver to lever the torque converter around until you see the drain plug. That way you're looking at it the whole time and won't miss it which sometimes happens if you use the crank bolt or a remote starter.

thanks a lot for all the help guys, this really is one of the best forums i've ever joined... lots of very useful info.

For the pressure regulator valve spring, i read up on it under transmission stickies and noticed that there is actually more then just one spring in the valve body, do i need to change all of them or just the one mentioned in sticky DIY? At this price I'd rather change all of them while i am in there. at times I am experiencing a little bit rough downshift while breaking and coming to a stop, i am assuming this could very well be caused by a faulty pressure regulator valve spring?

Pls let me know as i need to order parts and wanna do the work as soon as i get the parts.

PS: anyone here from Toronto? wondering if there are any good spots here in Toronto to buy parts at a good price ;-)

Thanks and a very happy new year to everyone.

Cheers.

on my 97, once i had the pan off, i took the plate off that retains the springs(mentiond in the above post)...all 12 or 14 or however many torqx screws, and my springs were fine. Just an fyi, its a LONG process to do that.

The pan drop and filter replacement in itself is very quick. Once you start rotating the torque converter you'll see the drain plug.
When i drained mine(that pic of the plug is my actual tranny) the fluid was nasty brown. So i would highly recommend taking the time for the torque converter drain.
