BAS Malfunction

I had a malfunction message on my W203 today that says ' BAS Visit Workshop ' while driving. However, there did not seem to be any difference in the car's performance and braking. After switching the car off and re-starting ( the Microsoft way! ), the malfunction turned off and did not reappear after driving.

As my next workshop service visit is not due for some months yet, is this something that I should worry about, or leave it till the next service?

Well, if the malfunction message has not returned, I would mention it at the next service. If it does return, bring it in and do not shut off the car so the message stays there. Tell the service advisor that it has happened before and if you turn off the car, the message might disappear. If he is smart, he will send someone out there to take a look. However, if the message appears and it is within 400 miles from your next service, have the service done at the same time to save you time.

BAS is the Brake Assist System and if there is a malfunction it would only come into play in an Emergency stop while applying full pressure. BAS applies full braking force because people tend to lighten up their pressure on the pedal in these situations

its not a problem

from what i read in the interative manual of the c-class it isnt such a problem .

myself i got often BAS and ESP - visit workshop messeges that after some kms and a stop and a go of the engine disapear .
seems its a general check of the whole sistem of sensors that sometimes fails - but if there is a real problem the sistem would be on in continue .

even no worry until a persistent problem - i know its annoying but thats life . its a small price for the mecerdes sign . i had esp activated and i saw the ! sign when i had a wet turn with my MB , after the ESP go to visit signals so the sistem if fully ok only that check and false problem reporting is a lil annoying i admit .

cheers

Hey everyone.

Trying to find a thread that dives deep into the BAS malfunction, but not finding much. I thought this thread might be the best place to post.

I'm driving a 2002 C320 Wagon and have the same issue as everyone else – "BAS visit workshop" message displays sporadically. Just BAS. No ESP or ABS errors. Haven't had any loss in performance. Everything feels normal.

What I want to know is where do I start? What's the first thing I should check... the second, the third, etc.? I've read it could be an alignment issue or wheel speed sensor. What's the best way and the best order to troubleshoot this?

You need to get the codes pulled. A generic OBDII scanner won't work - you'll either need to pay a dealer to hook it up to SDS or find an indy shop or friend (maybe a nearby fellow BW member?) who has SDS.

The mechanical switch on the brake pedal was discontinued in 2001/2002, so it may not have one (in that case the switch would be in the ABS control unit). Also, if the brake switch is bad, you usually get ABS/ESP lights, too, and the cruise control won't work.

You need codes from the ESP module. I would recommend that you buy your own scan tool that can read your car's proprietary systems. A generic $25 OBDII scanner won't do this. There are some fairly affordable ($100 or so) tools that will do this such as the Autel DiagLink, iCarsoft (i980, MB-II v 2.0 or v3.0) and the Foxwell n510 Elite. There may be others, too. Just look for ones advertised as reading "all systems" and for Mercedes-Benz. This way, you can read and reset codes for yourself without paying the shop. There are many people in the forums that, given the proper codes, can give you some direction.

You need to pull codes with a scanner capable of reading the ABS/ESP module.
