A170 oil change

I just completed an oil change, the last resort before opening the engine, to stop the hydraulic valve lifter noise.
I had already done an injector clean solution,a valve lifter solution, and an engine flush, with no difference.

My first impression is that the space is so limited under the vehicle.
I used to drive an xtrail...:)
It seems it is really best to work on a lift, but which DIY'er has one of those handy?

Next up was the massive splash plate covering the entire engine bay, split into two halves down the centre of the vehicle lengthways.
and we are not talking plastic here guys, 2 mm thick metal!
What do they think I am going to do to this vehicle, off road escapades?
It is africa, so perhaps we dont have roads here?

Emptying the old oil was no problem, just 5 litres gushing out at high volume.
Luckily my special oil recepticle just barely handled the large volume of liquid.

The oil filter was next, and there I found two o rings in the box.
The big one was obvious, but the smaller one had me baffled.
I did see one that could be that size on the centre spindle/mounting point for the cover, right at the bottom of the spindle, but had no idea how to get that off.
I then noticed that the cover has that plastic nut moulded on it, and a perished o ring, so I replaced that.
So, not sure if I replaced the right one, or how to replace the one on the spindle/mounting point.

Filled up with oil, and that blasted noise is still there.

Just my two cents on the subject.
Every time I do something on this vehicle I plan to post about it, because there is precious little out there on our baby Benzes.

And using the WIS is just short of a nightmare, so real-world experiences are the way to go, in my opinion.

Stay well.

If you go to your WIS search page and use Direct Search by document number.
Enter AP18.00-p-0101AQ. That is Engine Oil and Filter change for Engine 266 in W169.

Step #12 refers to code 484 Rough road. Without 484 the panelling is just a side strip with the exhaust pipe exposed.

With 484 the under paneling is full width, covering the exhaust. This helps prevent fire when parked in long, dry grass. (Africa?)

I am new to servicing the A class and do not have a service manual. I do not know where the oil filter box is located on the A180. I also fail to locate the fuel filter. Please assist

Please complete your profile with model/year/location before asking technical questions here, as there are many differences between models.

The oil filter is up by the front bulkhead on the right side of the engine (from the driver's view forward). There is a large nut on the filter housing cap, and you will need a socket extension bar to reach down there with your tools. Tighten the cap to 25 Nm after fitting the new filter.

Your fuel filter is integrated in the fuel pump with the fuel level sensor, all inside the fuel tank. The filter cannot be replaced separately.

Thanks found the oil filter box with a name on it as Diesel. The fuel filter is an issue as it is required to be changed every 80000 km or 4 years. I can replace with the next service. Where can I get a Maintenance Manual or WIS for the A180 CDI 2007 model since on the web/amazon/... they all have the pre 2005 and not the post 2005.

Thanks again

Aah.. You have a diesel. that's why we need your car details on your profile, as there are many differences between the petrol & diesel engines. From the WIS the diesel engine oil filter looks to be in a slightly different position to that on the petrol engines.

You are fortunate. On the diesels the fuel filter is not inside the tank. It is as shown in the WIS drawing below. You also have to remove water from the fuel system water separator.

My WIS/EPC came from eBay (UK) for about UKP 20. It covers all models from W124 (1986) to C207 (2010). It came on 6 disks and was a pita to install...:)

I have done a few jobs on my A170 here in Africa and space is a serious issue in that engine bay.

As for the Rough Road Kit, I think it is a great idea to make that std here in South Africa, does make access a problem though.

On another note, it has been one of the least reliable vehicles I have ever owned and that is coming from a guy who has owned two Land Rovers.
