Hey guys, here's the latest on the 87 560SL restoration - I JUST finished the wheels and had to post!

The wheels are 24 years old (paint worn off and scuffed pretty badly). I wet-sanded with 400-grit wet paper and a soft-block, prepped with scuff pad and paste, sprayed white sealer, then sprayed with DB735 Astral Silver base coat, then clear coat. There is no wax or buffing on these yet!

Really turned out well, congratulations! I am also planning to do the same, but on R129 16inch 15 hole wheels, for a future project.

May I ask as to why you decided to use the DB735 astral silver? Are these the original colors for those wheels?

Thank you in advance,

Chicky

I went the quick and dirty route on a set of those when we pressed SWMBOs 380SL into service this Spring. I bought the wheels with the rubbers off and just used 400 wet on them and sprayed with one can of the current Rustoleum silver wheel paint. For a $5, 2 hour job they look quite good. Not as nice as those, but still good enough for a spiffy daily driver that negotiates a dirt road 4 times a day.

littelred-

14" bundtcakes? Those are still a dime a dozen around here. I have been taking my grotty ones to the scrapyard to get $8 ( I am keeping the real nice ones, but 14" tires are going the way of the dinosaur- I wouldn't buy any unless you want to look forward to expensive tires in the future)
