I've been reading that many of you have repainted your peeling interiors and have been exchanging paints. Where can I buy this paint to do it myself? My interior is "leather sand+quartz (225)" if that helps. Thanks in advance. I am willing to purchase from someone if you have left overs. Thanks SOO much in advance.

Contact Alan Vipond at info@viponds.com.au by email - they have all 6 colours (matched from members cars) and will supply in 200mls qty
They will accept paypal in USD and send you an instruction sheet.

Go back 4 pages or search "peeling interior paint" for more inf. regarding application.

Just did my whole interior (after removing speedo panel to replace lights)- took about 90 min to :
#Lower vario roof for ease of access
#Remove console lid (2 screws) easier this way - good practice item
#wet sand peeling edges just a bit to smooth edges of peeling paint
#Wash down the panels with detergent and wipe off with wet towel
#Wipe down with alcohol (methylated spirits)- do not touch any further.
#Touch up scratches and peel (only) with fine brush - allow to dry fully (hair dryer - not too hot) -this brings level of paint up to height of original. Extra coats if needed.
#Mask (minimal) around the dash panels and tuck paper under console sides.
#Start with under dash and then glove box lid and progress to console top.
#Move seats fwd and wipe 1 coat of paint on rear of console with bit of
soft towel (lint free)- you don't have to paint right into cracks and joins.
#Move seat back when dry(watch seat belt locks) and wipe rest of console.
#Wait 1hr to dry and replace console lid - 24 hrs for full cure and results.
#Note that 2 thin coats is better than one

I had only done 1/2 of my console before - should have done the lot - brilliant finish -(Note -the pic of the finished console needs another coat - you can just see the repair under the paint)

Not to say that all detail shops are this way but here is what I have seen.

1. Resprays that are done with solvent based paint. The coating needs to be water borne. A solvent based coating will degrade the original paint base and cause problems later.
2. When parts are not removed before spraying, overspray is an issue.
3. Improper preparation of surfaces to be refinished prior to repainting.

When getting this done by a detail shop please be sure to know what products are being used. All refinishes will look good initially but a few years down the road an improper refinish will undermine any future restoration efforts on your interior.

If you do not want to remove your interior, Oberoi's method is very effective. The Viponds paint will not harm to the original base coating. Should any further scratches surface, you can repeat the process and all will be good again.

I have same peeling problem with my central console. At moment scratchs are few and very small..but i want correct this.

If i understand all posts, you really only paint scratch area, not all console..Is this correct? (Touch up scratches with fine brush)

I want buy that paint. I need anthracit (code 221 i think). To get this paint i must send direct mail to Vipond, that's all?

Note: cleaning console with alcohol (methylated spirits) don't take off paint?

Thanks

SLKPSM -Yes , Viponds are doing it direct now - they will reply advising details

Alcohol will not dissolve the paint - other petroleum solvents will. (only use acohol when prepping for painting- removes the plasticisers)

Best method is to touch up the chips to equalise the paint thickness and then mask the console and wipe the whole thing with paint and soft lint free cloth --brilliant and takes about 90 min -easy

See the main post for more info on this (peeling interior paint)

You can use old style caustic paint stripper with care - do a small bit at a time and wash off quickly when it bubbles - there may be milder forms of stripper in the US?

Any form of petroleum based solvent, acetone or paint thinners will dissolve the plastic.

Do you need to remove it all? - you can get a brilliant finish by just peeling off the top surfaces of the console and feathering the edges with wet and dry paper.

Paint 2 coats onto the bare bits only - then paint (wipe) the whole console once or twice with a lint free cloth. - In situ - no need to strip down

It is as good as the original Benz finish - no point getting it done professionally - it won't stick any better.

The trick is in good preparation - clean down with 'prepsol' or a good spray detergent - wash off and then clean with alcohol (methylated spirits) and don't touch any further.

All the R170s will peel or chip if caught with fingernails etc -- check out the 18 odd pages under 'interior paint peeling off' for further information.

Can email you fact sheet if you want - let me know

Your colour is called 'leather sand 225' by Benz -(sometimes called Sienna Beige)
The oyster is a grey colour and quite different - I thought mine was oyster originally - I think dealers get a bit loose with the details

The reason we did all the matching here was because it was not generally available in the US without sending sample each time for matching.

Viponds keep the formula and mix in large qty's for accuracy and send out in 200ml bottles

Altoidboi- do you have the 2000 ltd. edition obsidian black slk? I have, and my car booklet also said my interior was oyster and charcoal. I am planning to order some paint so I want to make sure that the "leather sand" color really is a match for my interior... the Russian VIN decoder seems to say it is.
