Hello, I have a unknown year Mercedes Unimog, the plaque under the hood reads
406.120 - 10 - 020600
Unimog 406
And 3 numbers slots for kg. weight
Daimler - Benz AG GAGGENAU at the top. I am assuming the AG means agriculture. It is all written in German.

There is also plaque and ceiling of the cab reading MFD in Canada.. not for occupancy and has a serial number that does not register in the Mercedes vin decoder.

How do I know what year my unimog is?
What serial number do I use when writting up a bill of sale?

Thanks in advance.

So the VIN number for your Mog is 40612010020600. You will not be able to find that in any VIN decoder as they all assume the VIN is in a standard format. Prior to 1981 VINs could be virtually any form the manufacturer wanted and varied widely in length and format. Also note that most VIN decoders assume the FMVSS-115 part 565 VIN format used in the US, while Europe and Asia use a slightly different format.

Per the MB format at the time your Mog was built, the VIN indicates your truck is a 406.120 model Unimog, left hand drive (1), manual transmission (0), serial number 020600. The serial numbers generally increment throughout the years, though there are a few out-of-order blocks. I am unable to find your data card in the US Datacard Project file, but it would appear to be a 1973 vintage. Unit number 406-121-10-020211 was built 1/73 and delivered 5/73. Unit 406-121-10-021010 was built 6/73 and delivered 8/73. If the engine is original it should have a serial number between 353.902-10-055889 and 353.902-10-056944

Edit: See here for a possible source of the original data card, the Unimog Museum in Germany:
