w203 cruise control does not work

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a 2005 c230 kompressor sport. I have noticed the cruise control is not working, everything else works fine. I have been told that it is likely the "actuator" and also have been told that this is likely integrated with the traction control/anti-lock brake system. I have been told that there is a lever system that connects to the throttle cable that maybe broke, but I was told by someone else that the w203 does not have this system.

Can anyone give me a differential diagnosis list of things to check. Couple of thoughts

1) everything else on the car appears to work correctly

2) 54000mi

3) basically the cruise just does nothing. use the cruise control stick in any direction and there is no change to the car's speed.

thanks in advance. I think I was taken for a ride by the dealer that sold me this car. Bummed.

Just to put the solution back in the community, I took the car into my local mechanic and he found a service bulletin, which states that the cruise control works at under 25 mph (mine does, I didn't even notice that it did) but shuts off above 25 mph. Apparently this has to do with the ME control module and it needs to be reprogrammed at the dealer.

Not sure what that is going to cost, but looks like I have a solution.

To complete this story, because it went on. Took the car to the dealer and they said that the previous owner put cheap tires on the car that did not match in size from front to back. Because the rims are different size in the front and back of this car, the tires are different size, even though they should be the same diameter.

In any case, replace the tires with good ones ($800), did not fix the problem. Took it back to the dealer, they ran 5 hours of tests, and said all indications are that the EC is bad. I guess the EC was still under warranty (thank god) and it was replace by the dealer. Cruise control now works. I guess the EC is about a $2000 job according to the dealer.

I wonder if the previous owner put some type of performance chip in the car that mess up the cruise control? In any case, I hope this story helps someone who has a similar problem in the future.

If the system detects any errors in the ESP/BAS system, cruise control will not work. Is your ESP or BAS error light on? If so, there is a problem and you will not have cruise control. Besides issues with mismatched wheel diameters and speed sensors, a common problem is the brake pedal switch. If it's bad, the hydraulic brake system will still work, but the electrical system won't detect the driver depressing the pedal and will throw errors.

Thanks Rodney.

No light on whatsoever. Also, in another post someone mentioned that their cruise worked at slow speeds. I tried it and it does. I haven't figured out yet what specific it will not kick in at, but when I tried accelerating with the cruise control handle, it got up to about 55 mph and just when I thought the next gear was going to kick in, it kicked it off.

Hi there, I know it's been many years, but did you figure out why Cruise control worked at low speeds but not on higher speeds? I have the same problem going on with only the steering angle sensor error (sensor that I have changed with a new one and it still throws it)
