Some OM606 diesel insight needed

Fellow members,

I am looking to do some preventive maintenance on my newly acquired '95 diesel within the next few weeks, and am looking for any hints, tricks and traps that other OM606 owners might be willing to share to the knowledge pool.

These are the things I am planning on replacing/upgrading.

1. Glow plugs & glow plug wiring harness

2. Injector return fuel hoses and all fuel related seals/hoses besides seals on pre & main filter. I have a minor fuel leak (from the injector return hoses) as well as some air in the clear hoses around the IP and filter assembly.

3. Engine wiring harness (to temp sensors, etc.)

Questions are as follows:

1. What is the proper procedure for detaching the cable linkage(s) at the top of the manifold? I know the crossover pipe needs to come off, but I don't quite see how the kickdown, cruise and throttle linkages disconnect. There is a bolt on the top of the intake manifold but it is covered by the throttle cable.

2. Since the glow plugs are prone to shearing off on the OM606 (mine are at 53K, original plugs on original engine), what is the proper torque spec on the plugs??? Also, can anti-seize lube be used or is there something better to prevent this from happening? I plan to get the engine as hot as possible and then try to removing the intake and get to the plugs while everything is still warm to allow the block to expand as much as possible and minimize the glows from getting stuck. Can I use a good shot of PB blaster to aid removal of the plugs???

3. Is reaming of the prechambers recommended on this engine with such low mileage, and can I use the reamer from my former OM617 ('84 300SD)? Engine runs clean, with no smoke and I use Red Line diesel fuel catalyst with every fill up.

4. Anybody have p/n#s for the glow plug harness as well as the engine harness? Mine is flaking and cruise is non-op, so I'm going to bite the bullett on the harness. Any sources besides the dealer would be of great help.

5. Are the intake manifold bolts re-useable or are they torque-to-yield (meaning use one time only). I will be replacing the crossover tube seals and intake manifold gasket, but I don't know if the bolts can be re-used.

6. There is a small rattle when I accelerate, which appears to be exhaust related. I think it could be a heat shield, perhaps catalyst??? Anybody have similar issue?

sbaert - I have the same car as you and I'm in the precess (right in the middle of it, actually) of doing some of the same work you're planning on doing.

1) Just pop the linkages out at the joints. They can be alittle stubborn, so, you may have to use a screw driver for leverage. Just be careful, they're plastic and could get damaged. Once you pop the linkages out of the way, you can undo the bolt.

2) GP torque setting - 27NM Yes to the rest.

3) My car has 124,000 - I also use Red Line and it looked pretty cruddy in there, I will be using the reamer. I am not sure about using your 617 reamer on your 606. I think the GPs in the '95 606 are longer

4) My harness looks pretty good...no info. Maybe atlantas420 can come through with the part number.

5) Yes, they are re-usable.

6) Nope, don't have any rattling issues.

Here's some great reading material - these guys are great and know these cars well.
