A friend of mine has a 1985 500sec widebody convertible in triple black with the 16x10 AMG Pentas in the rear and 16x9 in the front.

It is in super condition and he paid 18k for it about 10 years ago from someone in Florida.

Should I pick it up or get a 2002 129 convertible instead?

In 5yrs the 126 will be worth way more than you paid for it and the r129 will probably be worth about half or even less
The 129 will impress the ladies more and be quicker
The WB is about 1000 times cooler (at least to those in the know...)

Edit didnt notice the WB was convertible
If it wasnt done in period by a well known tuner its likely a piece of c**p
At the very least check it thoroughly for chassis weakness and expect scuttle shake....actually just buy the 129 or a 107 if you want something 80s...

I'm not into bashing either..I think all members here deserve respect..even though some members just live to put others down for whatever ignorant reasons. You can always disagree with others in a respectful manner I always say.

I think if the cover had been black it would have looked better. But still, I am sure it's a nice looking car and if someone gave it to me I wouldn't complain of course. =)

If its 040 black on 274 java / saffron interior, documented, mint and well -maintained with all books and records AND it has a 5.4L motor you should pass on it , buy the 129 chassis and let me buy it :D

seriously, hard to say without photos and more detail. doubly hard to give you an unbiased answer -- you are asking a bunch of 126 guys (many of whom are AMG aficionados) whether you should buy a 126 or a 129

i happen to love the 129 chassis (later models w/sport package and pano roof). good luck with the purchase, sounds like you will be getting a very nice car whatever you decide

and to reiterate.... please post photos!!

thanks

The issue with the 126 is not a looks thing so much as the roof on a large pillarless coupe has a big part to play in the structural integrity of the car and not all chop tops are equal when it comes to solving the engineering issues associated with such a dramatic mod

Also I was musing just recently ,after seeing a V12 r129 at a cheap price, how easy it is to forget just what a massive impact the 129 had when it was released in 89
I can remember being in total awe of that car on release especially the roll bar design
It was released when you could still buy mercedes cars designed in the 70s new!

Yeah and not to hijack the thread but the r129 is still impressive. Not too long ago I saw one where the driver looked homeless. The car had a hood that was all mangled up as well. It was a bad color combo (white with blue interior) but geez. When new it cost more than many houses and now look at it. A run down pile of junk. I can't believe it when I see a V12 Benz in such a sad shape.

I will post pics when I see the car again. I have already seen it and like I said is all black with black interior and black top.

I had a 107 (89 sl) which I would still have but it was totaled when a drunk driver drove a truck into it. So I wanted to get a 129 since then but have laid off because I wanted a specific one...however a 2000-2002 with the sport package will be fine with me.

I had my 107 AMG'ed out so to speak with the body colored AMG pentas on it...car was burgundy and looked great with the body colored wheels and AMG ground efx.

Also I did have a black 560sec with 32k but never really drove because the car always got dirty too quickly so I sold it after having it for three years.

over the past decade or so I have seen many sec convertibles, but this one is the only wide body one I have ever seen...also of note the fenders are metal not glass.

The car looks super in person and I am not sure about engine mods per se..but it has the WB AMG kit, AMG suspension, AMG Exhaust, AMG WB Pentas, AMG steering wheel and AMG badge on trunk...

I know the 129 is a "better" car but this WB just looks wicked..just wish it was another color since I am not into black MB's.

Even if you pass on it, someone here would probably want it (hint: me). Try to find out some history on it, and certainly post some pics.

If you are going to pass, please let me know. I'd love to be first in line.
