HI - I'm a recent 1986 560SL owner and have a question. I took the hardtop off yesterday to enjoy the spring weather and noticed a worn nylon bushing or grommet located between the hardtop and front windshield frame.

Its the one where the hardtop bolts down to the frame with the wrench. I would like to replace these if at all possible.

Would appreciate any info on what they are called and if possible a part number.
Also if they are diffucult to install or just hammered in. Here are a couple of picyures.
Thanks
Jay

I also replaced mine last Fall. They work with both the hardtop and convertible top to prevent rattles when the front top locks are secure. You will need to take a small screwdriver and carefully clean all the old plastic out. Carefully use solvent to clean residue. The new ones press in the cavity between the metal surfaces and stay in without adhesive. I got them at autopartswarehouse.com. They are listed as "top lock pad" under Body Mechanical and trim. Part number is O7053-14358. About $4 each.

Thanks folks for all the information. I only posted that question a couple of hours ago and already have 3 answers. I will get a pair of them ordered tonite if sunday internet orders are allowed. The part number is a great help.

You would be surprised at how many 107's are driving around with those entirely missing. I've had several 107 owners at shows ask "what are these"?

They are also very good at reducing "dents" from bad aim. I would immerse them in hot water before installing; no hammering, please. also, if the cowl metal is already dented, the seals will be very difficult to install because of reduced/no gap; CAREFUL prying up around the edge will help.

Buy several sets; mine go from white to yellow in one KY summer. In Florida, I'd give them a year from new to garbage.

If your cowl metal (stainless) is seriously dented (yours isn't too bad), it's VERY nasty to replace. I did it, but I broke my windshield in the process.

How important are they? Mine doesn't have them - my MB mechanic pointed out that they were missing and said I could replace them, but there didn't seem to be any urgency attached to it. If they're needed I'll get some tomorrow from the MB dealer.

Same here, Mine were almost gone when I got the car and I haven't bothered to replace them.

If they're that cheap I'll look into getting some tomorrow!

I had put new ones last summer but I still get the water leakage from the driver plastic light under the windshild frame after I wash the car...I have also changed all the rubber weatherstrip on soft top...did not help...

Any opinions?

Yes, test your windshield seal on the top edge. My leak was not from the top or gasket, it was from the windshield losing seal with the rubber sealant. You can test that with a little soapy water on the outside windshield edge and then
blow compressed air at the windshield from inside.

I have the same problems. More towels is the only answer I could come up with.:surrender:

I purchased mine 2 years ago and they remain in my toolbox. Not urgent and it will, like everything else, turn into a big ass job.

Went to the dealer, just on principle. Ordered 4 of them (so I have some spares) for a total cost of $16 and change.

It looks like I'll have to do some cleanout and bending of the fascia to get them in, but that shouldn't take too long.

I recently bought my 560sl and the prior owner preferred the car as a convertible. I prefer the hardtop and I bought a perfect hardtop (with the exception of seals) and within three months a bolt that is part of the locking mechanism for the hardtop started to push up and caused some damage. A tiny pin hole that was quick to rust.

I paid to have the problem fixed professionally, but before I took the car in I ordered a complete seal kit and the parts you show in your picture. The body shop said this part caused the problem.

Hi - I'm the one that originally poste the question on the grommet. With this forum's help and along with the part number I was able to order the correct two grommets. Shown below is pictures of the before and after. Looks a lot better since they were in plain view with the top off. Thanks for the help.

Does anyone know if the "bushings" are also supposed to go on the hard top hold downs like the one on my hard top pictured here? one side has one the other side does not....I am confused........I know the top windshield has them but I am wondering is this is correct.

I kind of see the groove in yours. Mine does not have it. I measured the parts. The tan one on the side latch was 36.65MM OD 22MM ID. At the windshield (installed) 30.5MM OD 18.75MM ID. This may not prove anything as the ones ones the windshield get compressed a bit when installed. I don't think they are compressed that much but who knows.

Interesting to note one of mine on the side latch was split and probably would have fallen off in the future. This could be the reason for some hardtops rattling when they get older.
