Performance Upgrades

I'm planning an upgrade of my 2004 CL500 with the following:

K&N Air Filters, ECU Upgrade, Sports Headers, 200 cell sports catalysts, Back Box with 2 single tail pipes, Sprint Booster, Crankshaft Pulley, Performance Camshafts, ignition cables, iridium spark plugs and Lowered Suspension (by 30mm all round). This should add about 100+ bhp.

Has anyone else carried out any of these mods and have they been worthwhile? Is there anything negative I need to be aware of in doing these mods?

Will I need to look at a full 8 pot Brembo brake upgrade with 380mm discs or will installing fast road pads, braided hoses and racing blue brake fluid be sufficient?

What about the LSD - will the OEM one suffice or will I really need an upgraded one to cope with the increased power?

And finally, is there anything else I ought to consider doing?

K&N Air Filters - no noticable performance on big engines
ECU Upgrade - agree
Sports Headers - agree
200 cell sports catalysts - agree
Sprint Booster - not recomended
Crankshaft Pulley - not recomended
Performance Camshafts - not recomended on engines more than 2yrs old
ignition cables - little if any performance
iridium spark plugs - not a performance item, more lifesaver for spark plugs
Lowered Suspension (by 30mm all round) - will not make your car drive faster :)

Overall, useful perform. upgrades are ECU and Headers. Rest, will deliver little or no performance.

Thanks for this. You've confirmed a few of my thoughts. Always felt S/Booster might make it difficult to drive smoothly at lower speeds and leads and plugs not really worth the money and if I started messing too much with the internal engine parts, I might wreck what's essentially a solid & reliable motor! The suspension is just about looks as the ABC lowers itself 30mm at over 100km/h anyway.

The only way you are going to see a 100+ HP difference is to increase the compression ratio and extensive head work along with all the other modifications. A supercharger will net you a little more than 100 HP without a doubt and more depending on the boost you run. You will not be happy with the power this work is going to net you and the cost it's going to take to modify a NA engine.

If you want a faster ride, sell the car and upgrade to a 55 or 600. Get a 600 and add an ECU tune. You will have 600+ hp and you will have much better resale value. A modified 500 will probably be worth LESS when you try to sell. Not to mention, you will likely need a custom ECU tune for the 500 when it is all said and done. That will not be cheap. Just can't believe it is cheaper to do all those mods on a 500 than buy a 55 or 600.

I'm new here bought my 2005 CL500 bout a month and half ago bout 112,350 mi on it. Where is the best place to purchase LED bulbs and lights. I'm still learning about the performance, planning on replacing the motor mounts within the week. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheapest and best mod

By far the cheapest performance change is to add a bottle of Lucas octane booster....even on a 500 rather than a 55. For 8 bucks it adds, according to my 'Torque + dongle' combo, 3-4 degrees of timing which you can definitely feel. Bad news is that it only lasts one tank full.
I have tries other octane additives but none work as well as the Lucas.
