Odometer Not Working

On the E420 that I just took possession of I noticed that although the speedometer works as it should, the Odometer does not work. As I was looking for a replacement car I noticed 2 other Mercedes that had the same problem; speedometer working properly and odometer not working at all. Is this a common problem? What is the fix? Is one electic and the other mechanical? Thanks in advance.

This is a common problem found on European cars with the VDO brand speedometer/odometer. The speedo cable drives the odometer through a set of gears. One of the gears (plastic) either cracks and "walks" off its shaft or just plain walks off the shaft. Sometimes the odometer shaft seizes to cause this and sometimes it doesn't.
In any event the instrument cluster must be removed and the speedo/odo must be removed from the cluster.
At that point you can:
1) push the gear back on the shaft, reinstall, and see what happens
2) have a speedo shop service your part
3) buy a brand new speedo/odo assy from MBZ and they will set the new odometer to match the broken one's mileage.
I've done both 1 and 3

This actually happed to my diesel during a little weekend drive. I pressed the mileage reset a few times and viola, odometer is working again.
That may only be because of its low mileage though, I don't know anything else about these odometers not working except for what's been stated previously.

A while back I read somewhere that on our MBZ that you should never reset the trip odometer when the car is in motion because it can cause the plastic gears to jam, walk, or break by losing a few teeth.

The car being in motion while I was pressing the reset a multitude of times is exactly what repaired my odometer problem. Interesting idea though...

My 300TE just started having that problem after I hit the Trip reset. Somewhere in the many posts of this forum is a link to a site that shows you how to pull the speedometer and fix it.
It was a little too complicated for me to want to try it.

My local shop says that they can "try" to fix it for $230.
They also said that a new speedometer was "really" expensive but I couldn't get them to give me a solid price.

Any one know how much a replacement speedo costs?
