MB-A Winch vs MB-C Winch

I am curious if anyone on here has used both of the MB winches? I'm guessing not many have but here's to hoping..... I used the search function. However I am looking for "real world" experiences.

Do you have a preference between the two? I know the basics (listed below)... I have the MB-A winch on my 404 now (although I haven't gotten to use it yet) and have the opportunity to purchase a MB-C. I plan on using the 404 mainly for off-roading. If I could buy the MB-C and sell the MB-A for what I spent on the MB-C which would you rather have on the front of your MOG?

Are there some circumstances that it would be advantageous to have one type over the other?

MB Type A Winch
3,500 kilos pulling capacity
Cable speed: 0.8 to 1.0 meters
per second
50 meters of cable,
12mm diameter

MB Type C Winch
3,500 kilos pulling capacity.
Slip clutch disengages at 3,850 kilos
Cable speed: 0.31 to 0.41 meters
per second
50 meters of cable,
12mm diameter

That is one of my main considerations however if you notice from the specs the slip clutch disengages at 3,850 which is higher than the pulling capacity of the winch. I guess the biggest negative for me is that if the load being pulled exceeds the pulling capacity of the MB-A winch then the truck stalls/dies. This I could see as a possible problem.

I have only used the type C and it was pretty fast from recollection. I have heard that the A s are basically too fast for controlled use which would make sense from the specs you gave. I once had my PTO in 1000 instead of 540 on the 140 not being familiar with how the lever works (out and in rather than forward and backwards) and it was almost impossible to winch up a little cliff. I killed the engine a few times and finally had to rev it up slip the clutch and launch up the cliff. It worked but not very safe or controlled. The difference between the A and C is even greater than 1000 vs 540 so in short I've vote hands down for the C. Also having the clutch is not a bad thing. Perhaps the A has a shear pin. There really should be something cheap to give before you break something expensive. Someone recently said that the Merc and Werner winches were way under rated.

Maybe the A would be good for log skidding where you want to get a lot done quickly rather than for self recovery.

Unless you are in a competition or you really have to make that date, line speed is not going to mean crap. Face it .....another minute or two in the life of a Mog owner..lol.
I have an Type A on the 416 and its more than enough... I have skidded everything, including the mog. Until I get a Mountain restraint of sorts either Type A or C will do you good.
As far as the slip clutch goes, I believe the ratings are for lifting, therefore the pulling is substantial more. (someone please clarify If I'm wrong).
A type A is rated at 6 ton , but I would put it against a Warn 16k (or other) and feel good abut the results.

For all of those who contributed and shared thank you for the thoughts. ideas and experiences. I am still hoping to find someone who has used both and can give me a direct comparison in their opinion of which is better/more user friendly.

Concerning your dilemma, I wish I could advise you as to which is a better choice for you! My dilemma is that I have recently located a complete & working PTO Assembly for my 1963 Swiss 404 and am in the market for a winch. If & when you decide which unit to mount on your Unimog, I am interested in obtaining the unit that you will not have a need for. If by chance you stay with the model "A", would you put me in contact with the owner of the Model "C"

THANKS for your time!!!!!!!!

Do you know how it mounts to a 404?
All the pictures I see of PTO winches show them mounted to 406 and 416's - their bumpers have the PTO cutout in them.
How does it mount to a 404 - as it does not have the PTO cutout or do you need a special bumper for the 404 as well?
Thanks,

I had a type "H" winch on my 406. Worked great; nice and slow at 540 rpm, easy to engage and slip. I don't know a whole lot about the capacity other than it will pull the 406 backwards with the lockers engaged in crawler first gear. It mounts to the rear frame horns. I don't think there is a mounting option for the front with this winch. It's currently on the floor of the shop while the backhoe mount is attached.

Still hoping for someone who has used both winches to see this thread and give me their input. However I am becoming doubtful that anyone has used both winches. And if there is someone who has they either don't have the time to reply or aren't on the forum.

I was kind of hoping that one of the vendors would see this thread and chime in.....
