Interesting Side Affect - Using LED for Courtesy Lights

Yesterday, I was having to clean some corrosion off the control board on my ML550's blower fan assembly.

Having finished cleaning the fan's control board, and about to hook up the leads to the passenger side's courtesy light (foot well), I looked at the 5W 12v Festoon Bulb used for the courtesy light. see pic attached, below.

I had some LED lights on hand, and decided to see if the LED's bright white colour looked better than the Festoon bulb's yellow glow.

So, I installed the LED bulb (see pic attached, below).

I opened the door to activate the passenger side's courtesy light and, WOW!, it looked soooo much nicer.... especially with the interior's black appointments. :grin

What I didn't expect, was an added bonus by using the LED.

When I went for a test drive (to test the blower fan) the courtesy LED bulb dimmed right down, as did the driver's side festoon bulb, but the LED didn't fully turn off. :eek

Instead, the LED light stayed on, dimly. The effect was wonderful. :smile

I took my wife out for another test drive, when it was completely dark outside.

She saw the nice bright, white, foot well light up when she opened the door and got in, and then as the interior lights dimmed off, she saw her foot well stay dimly lit.

She loved it!

It is similar to the soft glow of the interior lighting scheme on our 2012 ML350, that stays on with night-time driving.

The soft dim of the LED did not distract, or interfere at all, with my night-time driving.

We both liked the look so much, that I am going to install the same kind of LED on the driver's foot well, today.

One last thing, in using these LED's, no fault message flashed on the Console.... that was good, too!

Hope this may be of interest.

Take Care, and May God Bless, Arctic

I will be curious to see if they remain error free once you have more than one installed in the circuit. It could be that the other non-LED bulb is providing enough resistance to not trigger the message.

I don't think the LEDs that are sold as replacements stay on. There's a YouTube video on the installation on the w164 and they appear to work as the originals do.

They are in my ebay cart... it's only a matter of time before I click to buy.

I switched out to HID low beams off Amazon ($30 shipped). Now I want more pure 6000k light. Running/ parking LEDs (also 6000k) are next.

They simply look fresher.

Have Fun... LOL those Bulks are a PITA to change. and ive been thought roughly 7 or 8 different bulbs (from 30$ a set to 1.50 a set) and only one dosn't flash or blink. Depending on the Year you may or may not get an error on the dash. (mine is an 08 and no errors) and the ones i have in are a nice Clean White but only issue is that when i park the Right side DRL blinks once in a while.

it looks nice when driving and sitting with out the Yellow light but so much time and money into a stupid bulb it was just a headache

And to go along with the Thread they day i picked my car up i switched all the interior lights to LED. and i do not regret. Biggest PITA was front map lights. (the big dome ones over head unit) and best advise i can give to to get a skinny bulb as close to stock as possible because the hole for it to fit into gives very little room for the added width for LED. i hade to shace about a mm to get the bulb in and that required me to disassemble the assembly to get to the plastic hidden by the PCB.

other than that all the other bulbs are pretty much plug and play on the interior.

and going forward if you wish to switch out the reverse lights for led. NO MATTER WHAT THE BULB SAYS YOU WILL NEED A RESISTOR. they are cheap and if your using amazon they usually add on for free shipping. trust me. GET THE RESISTORS. and another tip you can mount the resistor to the Screw that bots the taillight assembly to the body. (on on the outside of the car) plenty of room and is touching metal to help heat. (also note the resistor does not go inline. Red taps into power side and Black MUST Go to a GROUND not tapped into the negative wire)

Hope this helps

Good luck
