First, you will need 2 tools:
-a short Philip's head screw driver
-an 8mm key with a long extension

Open the door to its widest position and using your 8mm key remove the two 8mm bolts (pic 1)

Then, turn the wheels toward you giving you more clearance to get to the front screw (hidden behind the panel highlighted in pic 2)

Now the slightly trick part. There are 2 plastic tabs that need to slide out of their lock position (located behind the highlighted areas in pic 3)

To remove the panel, push the panel towards the open door. Your going to have to play with it a while until the clamps disengage from their supports.

Once the panels are off, removing the mesh is simple. There are 6 small tabs holding it in place see (pic 4). Gently pry it off with your hands and WALAH... your done.

To re-install the panels simply reverse the process.

It is not adjustable, so my guess is that it is not properly latched on.
I would suggest removing and re-installing the panel.
It should solve the door rubbing issue.

I'm trading my silver arrow fins for plain stock ones from a fellow benzworld member.
Upon his request, I decided to post a "how to do" for all to share in case other members need this information in the future.

I will probably be removing the panel some time next week to install my replacement mesh grills.

If you can to wait, I'll upload more photos of the panel's underside, and some of the latch clips.

Now that Tech-Tune has explained how the side panels are fixed I now know why one of my side panels seems to stick out a bit. I assume that one of the clips/lugs has not engaged properly.

My two vent side panels were obviously fitted as a face-lift and were maybe taken from a salvaged car. I have noticed that there are some scratches under the wheel arch that reveal what I think is almandine red paintwork.

I would like to take them off and repaint them and re-fix them properly.
Thanks for the useful info TT

A couple of years ago I decided that I didn’t like the “plain” look of the mesh inserts in the front panels that Tech-Tune is showing us how to remove. Thanks again for BW and guys like TT to help all of us be our own Mechs.
I thought a long time about what to put in there to replace these plastic mesh inserts – never found anything that would work OR that I liked!
So I had the original inserts chromed. The plastic is slightly flexible and slightly waxy feeling, I didn’t know if they could be successfully chromed.
Finally found a place in So-Cal that said that they could chrome ANYTHING – for example they had chromed a women’s SHOE!!!!!
This place did a fantastic job – unfortunately recently I wanted some other parts chromed for another MBZ that I restoring, and this company has gone out of business – Damn EPA I wager!!
Being very careful while re-installing the mesh panels so that I didn’t crack the chroming and have it start to flake off – I could not be happier with the result!
Just a little subtle difference that possible MBZ should have done in the original design.

Now that Thorpilot has illustrated how the grille colour can be easily changed and TT has explained how easy it is to remove the grille, stand by for photos of personalised side panel grilles

Uh oh... I smell something cooking at Redliner's.

Please share with the rest of us when your secret project is completed.

More photos

I just removed the panels again and took some more pictures of the under side of the panels. I hope this will better assist people on how to properly remove the panels.
I actually broke one of my clips the first time I removed my panel. Thus one of the reasons for this post. (although not to worry, the dealer sells these clips for about 2 dollars each)

I also took some pictures of the stock grills next to my S.A. grills with fins.

Enjoy.

Hi Tech-Tune
A few years ago I bought panels complete with the 2 chrome fins - at the time I didn't apprecaite that they were Silver Arrows parts (though I bought from "Silver Arrow"who was on this forum yeara ago so I should have guessed)

I like the fins. Do you know whether I can fit the grill c/w fins to my existing panels or would I need to buy completely new SA panels

Cheers

Alan

The answer is yes. It is possible to purchase the fins separately and use your existing mesh.
You will need to drill 2 small holes in each mesh in order to latch the fins onto them.
They seem to be strong enough to support the added weight of the fins without the use of the stock mounting plate IMO.

TT (assumign you are still here - pity to us all if you are not...I've written separately on the door speaker thread to this effect). Thanks very much for this - I'm happy to buy new grilles too if the find don't come separately so if you have any info, eg part numbers, this would be very useful. I like the fins so much I'd even go for the whole panel if it came down to it.

Thanks

Alan
