Hard Top Storage

OK, car going into shop next week for surgery to stabilize it for future heart and brain surgery.

Meanwhile it sits in the garage under its form fitted cover.

I want to take the hard top off and leave the (new) soft top up.

And, question is, what to do with the hard top when it's not mounted. It needs work too, all new seals and what not, but that's for the future.

Regardless, I looked for relevant posts on this forum and found several but they were all very old.

So, does anybody have any current experience with this cart?

And/or any recommendations.

Suspending from the ceiling is feasible. Is it worth the trouble? I have floor space for the cart with hard top on board.

Thanks.

I have two of those carts. They work just fine for storage, casters are handy. I also use a top hoist and leave one suspended when not in use. I would HIGHLY recommend a hoist simply for pure convenience and reducing the possibility of damaging the top from an inattentive assistant removing it manually. Be SURE you get the lag bolts securely into the ceiling trusses for the top hoist. Having a roof fall would be a bummer.

I've got basically the same cart, and it is doing the job for me. When I bought our car, the seller had the hard top suspended by the apparently common bracket/pully arrangement, from from a garage roof beam. That top hung up there for who knows how many years, without falling on the car beneath, but I passed on using it.

I had I of those back when I had 4 hard tops for my r129. It worked fine. That said, for the same money you can buy an electronic hoist and harness (literally 3 appropriate ratchet straps). Which makes install and removal so easy one person can do it. And frees floor space.

When I downsized to only one hard top, I left it suspended on the hoist. And the only cart I kept was a portable/collapsible one for road trips.

Its can be a "one man job" two ways:

1- If you are as strong and agile as forum member @Fonzi you can do the "turtle lift".

2- If you a weak old fart like me you can drive your R107 under a Ceiling Hoist, lift off the top, drive the R107 away from under the Hoist, lower the top on the floor, lay stand on top of hard top, and flip the top/stand upright.

Or, for the potential that it might fall from the ceiling and damage ones R107.

Here again my solution. The cover is very useful!

In my youth I had a 1965 Corvair Corsa convertible and my parking spot was the one under my dad's small cartop boat cleverly suspended from the ceiling...
I was not impressed one day when one of the fasteners gave way after many years and the bow of the boat came down on my car. Luckily nobody was injured and the windshield frame took most of the hit. I now have trust issues with unusual things suspended above me and I use a URO cart for my hardtop. :)

I have problems with storing my hard top overhead because of that guy named "Murphy" :-(
