H&R Lowered Springs R107

Hi I'm thinking of fitting these to my 87 300SL as the current OE suspension feels a little soft.

Has anyone fitted the H&R lowered springs, -50mm on the front and -15mm on the rear?

If yes how have they changed the feel & ride of the car. Do you need to change the shocks / dampers too?

Apologies if this has already been answered.

I put them in my car and it lowered the front by the advertised 2". They are supposed to raise the rear by 15mm - not lower it - since the rears look a little low. But my rear went up by 2". Looks stupid. My mechanic claims 4-5 hours to swap the rears so its been sitting this way for a while. We did put the 18mm front spring rubbers in to raise the front by 5mm but still yuck. I've since heard that the rears need to have a coil removed. But even the 2" drop at the front is too much.... I have another set if you still want some!

Hi there
Im a total newbie to this forum and the info is great! Your pics of your car with H&R springs is interesting!
This is what my 450slc looks like today before the new h&r springs are fitted. The car came from california so had the terrible bumpers which i switched for euro ones. The front is quite high and i hope the -50mm drop wont be too much. I may get the thickest spring pads from MB and fit these at the same time to try and minimise the drop. I also dont want the rear any higher so may not fit the +15mm springs - wonder if this will upset the ride/handling? Amazing that the +15 rear springs raised the rear of your car 2” - that is not good!

I had H&R lowered springs on my 560SL, however I've now moved on to something better! Variable coil over springs for R107s. There is a company in South Australia (Dkubus) that produce these. These springs allow you to set the correct ride height and perform a lot better that H&R springs. SL Shop in the United Kingdom have used their springs in developing their unique R107s. Check them out... Dkubus Blackline 107 adjustable suspension system | dkubus Pty Ltd
I can sent you pictures of my car if you are interested.

Thanks so much for that advice. Here is a pic of the rear height of my car its just over 22inches - i think I will not change the rear springs as you suggest to see how it looks. I hope this wont affect or unballance the handling! I might see if i can source some thinner rubber shims for the rear springs if i do decide to fit the new springs to the rear...

Part of my problem (4mm to be precise) is that I used the 14mm rear spring pad. I just realized (not sure why I didn't see it before) is that there is a 9.5mm pad 115.325.22.44 available as well. The 14mm pad that was on the car had compressed to 10mm or so over 30+ years. So going with the 14mm pad added 4mm to the gain in the rear. So H&R was responsible for only 46mm of the gain! One option to lift the rear a little might be to go with the 18mm spring pad rather than screw with the spring itself. But maybe that makes the suspension more 'jiggly'?

But I would do the fronts and see how it goes. These things are not back road burners anyway and probably have a ton of understeer (?) so I doubt having the sports at the front will do hurt. Anyone who knows suspension have an idea what would happen?

This is the response from H&R today - was very helpful...

Re Part no. 29071-1 -50/HA+15mm to fit 1978 Mercedes 450SLC C107
Dear Mr. Hammond,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Correct, with our spring set 29071-1, the front will be lower than the rear after installation.

I´ll attach a picture of the original (“350SLC-W107C-orig.jpg”) and one with the springs installed (“SLC-Federn.jpg”),

it´s a 350 SLC only but the effect will be similar, so similar to the pictures you provided in your mail.

The car in the picture was one of our test cars and equipped with the original Mercedes rubber shim,

no. 1 on the front and no. 2 on the rear.

Bigger raising than 15 mm on the rear:

The lowering/ raising data given is measured from a new car. Within the years suspensions sag down, so

at a car with 40 years plus of age it is not in original (new) height anymore and thus the raising of the rear

is more “extreme” then.

Plus, back in the 1970s and 80s, the car manufacturers had pretty big tolerances when it came to the

individual car heights so this is something why the lowering/ raising amount is always only “approximate” but never 100% for each car on the market.

Using springs only on the front axle:

Technically no big problem in case you do not have to homologate the parts (in Germany you cannot do this as the kit is only TĂśV approved for using it on both axles) or need a TĂśV approval.

The rear will stay original then and the front will get low, plus a slight bit stiffer then.

Hope this helps!

Mit freundlichen GrĂĽĂźen / best regards
