107 is the series - the SL and SLC
044 means it is a 450 SL (or early 350 SL 4.5)
1 - left hand drive
2 - automatic transmission
022283 is the serial number

You can't get anything else from the VIN other than that.

Your VIN would suggest it was manufactured in Germany. There are a few older cars that have an odd digit that indicates something like "Assembled in Mexico" but that's not the case for your car. If you really want to learn about your car's options etc you need the DATA CARD from MB at a cost of $150. But what do you want to know specifically?

There may be a data plate on the cross piece in front of the radiator - it would have raised letters on it. (Not sure if this is true for 107 cars, they are to late for my knowledge base). That gives some option information as well as the color code, etc.

That’s correct that 107s have a screwed on options plate that is mostly numbers (letters often appended to the three digit color codes). The numbers on a 107 data plate are not the complete options list, but I believe the body color and mechanical items that someone on the assembly line would need to know when doing the mechanical items, like the motor, body color, LSD rear end, etc.

The paper options code sheets can often be found under the plastic jack boot cap or under the driver seat or shifter panel.

This thread already has as much info as you can get from the VIN itself. The option plate will have the exterior color and the various the options. You can decode those on the SL Registry website: https://www.sl-registry.com/decoder/

If you want the interior color, engine number, transmission number and few other things you need to find the build sheet. The common spots for the build sheet are in the tire jack holder in the trunk, on the underside of the center console, under the seat or on the seat rail. If its not there, you'll need to pay Mercedes to get you the production data card.
