Bunch of annoying problems with 2006 ML350

Hi folks,

My daughter's 2006 ML350 is mostly a good car, but it's got a number of annoying issues:

1. Shows left fog light out, but fog light actually works, and both of them are on even when the headlights are set to Auto.

2. Left low beam intermittently flickers a few times and then goes out when first switched on. Usually it works after a couple of tries, or may come back on by itself. These seem to be the lamps that automatically align themselves. HID?

I'm thinking 1 and 2 may both be signs of a bad front SAM?

3. Evap leak CEL, check gas cap. Does the gas cap ever fix this? Or is it more likely to be the valve that's located in the RR wheel well?

4. RF door lock bounces on lock. I replaced the little spring, but the original one was not broken. While I had the door apart, the mechanism worked fine. Once I had it back together it was bouncing again. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes it bounces but still locks. Usually it bounces and doesn't lock.

5. The odometer usually just reads dashes, but will very rarely show the mileage (133XXX miles). The dealer says it needs a new cluster ($1500). Speedo Solutions says it wasn't programmed correctly and needs to be reset ($200) and reprogrammed to the car ($???). Anybody had this done before? Any advice on it?

Thanks in advance for help and advice.

Regarding the cluster, if you pay to have it reset, then the dealer (or anyone else with it) can uses SDS to re-adapt the cluster to the car and that should fix the odometer. Now, whether the dealer will do that or not is another story. Some will work with customers on things like this, others will only swap parts. Also, if you do have the odometer reset, don't install it until you are ready to have it re-adapter. There is a very limited number of miles it can accumulate before it is "locked" again.

#1 - Did someone replace with cheap LED bulbs? That will cause this scenario.

#2 - Post the VIN and I will grab your datacard. Then you will know exactly what headlights she has.

#4 - I just did the machine-gun lock “cheap 5-minute fix” on my sons 2004 C230 yesterday. Does her car have lock knobs that pop up and down? If so, unscrew the knob and put a single wrap of electrical tape around it and replace. The tape provides the resistance that is missing from the broken internal spring. Not pretty, but it works like magic. ?

VIN is 4JGBB86E96A008813

The door lock actually changes behavior maybe with temperature. Seems to work fine when the weather is cold, and more likely to bounce when it's hot. I'm thinking I should have cleaned and re-greased it while I had it out. I'll certainly try your fix, though.

The fog lights look to be proper halogen bulbs. It seems pretty weird that they're on when they're supposed to be off.

Thanks

I agree, that is weird. They should only come on if you switch to ON and pull the knob out. You might have a bad switch. I would rule that out before going down the SAM rabbit hole.

Here is a video explaining the machine-gun lock cheap-fix:

Datacard attached. Nice options! Real leather and all the bells including Bi-Xenon headlights. Mine is a 2008 with similar options, except I have the fake leather.
