Dudes, what's the best bang of the buck brake upgrade for a 89' W124 300CE?

Possible to transplant some OEM AMG brakes from other models onto the W124?

For keeping the original 15" rims, go for the brakes from the W124.091 (300 TE 24 valve) Four piston calipers in front with bigger discs, and vented disc rear. A good improvement over the 12 valve's brakes. Do also change all hoses and perhaps rebuild master cylinder!!!

Well you said junkyard calipers. You won't find anything like that in a junkyard unless you hit the jackpot.

Junkyard-aside...the skys the limit. You can put huge 6pot calipers on with 18's and later model LCA's, knuckles and some cutting...but there is no point since anything realistically bigger than 4pot calipers will have no gains. I wouldn't bother going bigger than the Silver Arrow calipers. The 4pot 400E calipers are more than enough for the V8, let alone the M103.

Actually, small clarification. R129 Silver Arrow brakes are the same as "regular" SL600 brakes, except that the calipers are painted silver and the rotors are drilled. I have Silver Arrow rotors and "regular" SL600 calipers on my wagon. They're a killer setup, but I'd say that for most folks running stock engines simply upgrading to better pads or the factory four piston calipers is the best bang for the buck. 124 brakes are already quite decent if properly maintained.

So all R129 SL600 calipers are the same size (I don't care about color)? I was searching and some years are grouped with the SL500s and some years are not.

As I understand the SL600s are:

Front: 334mm x 32mm
Rear: 300mm x 22mm

Do the R129 SL320 or SL500 have these sizes any years?

Thanks for the pic. You got that STD runnin' yet? I may be getting my engine next week:)

I believe some SL500 models were equipped with the same brake combos as SL600s, though I couldn't tell you what years apply. I think it's already been mentioned, but you can't easily swap those brakes onto most 4/5/6cyl 124s. Most cars will need the welded balljoint LCAs, 129 or V8 knuckles, and modified or new 129 backing plates. I also swapped in a 500E master cylinder. All told, in order to do that swap correctly, you might need to budget between $1k and $1.5k depending on the used parts prices. That money is probably better spent on other more vital projects.

With these W124s being older like say around 20 years on the road, you could most likely get an improvement in braking just by replacing your brake lines with stainless steel teflon-coated brake lines. There are only four of them and they are what, about a foot or a foot and a half long, and the OEM ones are probably the ones that came new on the car. Old brake hoses stretch laterally when you apply the brakes instead of being rigid they way they are originally supposed to be. That's an upgrade of less than $100 if you replace them yourself. Happy Motoring!!!

calipers wheels discs lug bolts

The 300CE coupes had bigger front brakes, larger enough that some wheels for sedans will not fit the coupes. I learned this the hard way when I bought spare wheels from a sedan to fit a coupe. HA!! So you could swap the calipers and discs for the larger ones but may need other wheels, which could also lead to the need to buy longer (or shorter?) lug bolts/wheel studs. Those wheel studs can cost about $75 for a full set.
