I have a 1988 SEC with a 10P17C NIppendenso compressor. It is a 5 piston compressor. I guess you call it a wobble plate. So my project has a rebuilt compressor, new condenser and expansion valve. New lines also. I am flushing the evaporator core as well. I will be using R134A. When I look at the Nippendenso information I get a number of data much of it contradictory. One shows if you use R12 then the compressor needs 2.1 oz and if its R134 then 5.2. So I am a little confused here since I can't imagine there is that much difference with the change in freon. Also no where can I find what viscosity of oil to use 46, 100 or 140. So can someone answer these three questions?

1) How much oil should be put into the compressor?
2) How much oil into the rest of the system?
3) What viscosity of oil should I use?

Thanks in advance.

Mercedes calls for PAG 100 oil and they list oil charge as 4 oz of oil. That seems low to me. General rule of thumb is the evaporator will retain 2 oz, condenser 2 oz and the dryer 1 oz. the compressor crankcase will vary. I read the Sanden manual and their procedure is to run the engine at 2K then immediately shut off the a/c and drain the compressor to measure what is remaining. 2-4 Oz was their recommendation. Sounds like a total pain. Too little oil and your compressor goes up in smoke so I would trend towards a couple more oz in the system like 6. Slightly more won’t effect the cooling from my experience. You can fill the compressor with 4oz and add 2 oz in other places.
