I notice one of the big differences in the early R230's (2003 vs 2004) is the 5G and 7G transmissions.

I currently drive a W211 with the 7G-tronic, and it's all great and fun. How does the 5G-tronic stand up to it? I'm thinking about buying a used SL500, and I'm not sure if there's a big difference between the 2003 and 2004 models. Which do you prefer/recommend?

Old post, but food for thought...The 5G is capable of 796 lb-ft of torque whereas the 7G can only handle 542 lb-ft. Probably manufactured with smaller components to keep a similar sized package, thus weaker.

It's a bolt-on and would fit, but the electronics would be a huge issue. I am sure it's "possible", but it would require a lot of hacking. The TCU on the 722.9 is a theft-relevant parts that requires SCN coding.
