560SEC Seat Belt Retractor

The drivers's side seat belt retractor has stopped working on my 87 560 SEC. It was working this past fall when I replaced the entire arm. The passenger side is working perfectly. I do not hear the motor running when I shut the driver's door. When I push the plunger (first one among the 3) on the door frame, I hear a click in the dash. I am assuming the retractor's motor is not getting power. HELP! Any suggestions where to start would be appreciated!

I'd first suspect the relay which controls the arm, there is one on each side kind of behind the rear most end of the arm assembly. If you pop out the seat backs you'll see a bit of it. I took off the rear interior side panels to replace them.

Perhaps there was corrosion or crud at the fuse and removal cleaned the contact? Kind of like when the batteries in a TV remote are getting old and it won't work until you remove the cover and spin them a few times in their slots. I guess it knocks a zillionth of an inch of something off the battery contact and restores power. Short term fix. I spend too much time in hotels and have probably restored remotes 50 times with this trick over the years.

No, sometimes they get jammed and overload the relay. It says in the service manual very clearly that if they don't work, to pull fuse 7 for 30 seconds as he did to reset them. He did the correct procedure.

Hey guys I couldn't find an exact match to my problem in the forum so my apologies if this has been asked before. On the driver's seat belt arm once you put the key in the ignition the arm continuously goes in and out repeatedly 6 to 10 times before it stops.

Any ideas and thank you for your help.

Mine does this on occasion, too. My understanding is there are is a microswitch on the mechanism that tells the arm when to stop. If it isn't reaching that switch when it extends, it won't stop in the extended position and will keep repeating.

I find that if I grab the belt just before full extension to reduce the strain on the arm, it will stay in the extended position.

While this thread has bee revived . . . . . the passenger presenter on my 560 has been disconnected (per maintenance paperwork the PO had done) due to repair parts NLA. I don't know if the presenters on the 500 are operational, assuming the passenger one is due to belt being hooked up as if someone was in the seat. Are the GenI and GenII similar enough to use parts from it ? If not I have a pair I'll put on the for sale thread

I don't know exactly what is wrong with it, just what was in the paperwork the PO was having trouble with the extender motor staying engaged (??) and was running the battery down and it was disconnected due to "parts NLA" I haven't taken it apart because it's not a critical issue but if the assemblies are similar to the GenI I'll pull those presenters

As Bruce and Ian have said, there are micro switches that set the fore and aft travel limits, and there is a little plastic tab that engages the switches. Check to see if that is missing first.

My right side sometimes does that too, once in a while.

Bruce, I have spare presenter arms, like a dozen of them if you need one. LMK.

Gen I and Gen II's are different and even late Gen II's are completely different to anything earlier. They changed them to a completely different type of connector in 90 I think.

That's ok Mike, I appreciate the offer but I don't want to take away from your fine ride :devil (J/K) It was the thought that counts. I didn't know if they cross fit and like you said (I didn't know either) they even upgraded the upgrade. This isn't a critical nor safety item so it'll go down my list
