I had my car in for B-service today and was told that the battery failed the test and needed to be replaced. Naturally I declined assuming that I could find a good battery somewhere and do it myself but the more I read the more I question that idea.

Is it worth the savings (I was quoted $194 installed at MB, and I figure it will cost at least $110 for a good battery at autozone, etc.) to track one of these down and do it myself, or is it enough of a waste of time and hassle to just call roadside assistance? BTW, does roadside assistance a warranty thing or a MB ownership thing (I'm out of warranty).

Thanks

That price seems pretty fair. I would have thought it would be 2 - 3 times more. I have heard that some times when a battery is changed on this car that there may be "things" that need to be reset, so that price seems very fair.

Of course if it is your typical battery change I would just do it myself. I would think a battery would be around $85 at the auto parts store.

Yes, this is a little known benefit, it's better to call roadside assistance for a new battery than paying a dealer to do it or doing it yourself. This applies to all MB's, all ages, regardless of warranty or not. I did this on my kid's SLK230 a few months back, $135 installed.

I also had one replaced by MB Roadside Assistance as well....

actually I had called the MB dealer's parts dept to ask about the price of a new battery...

however, the parts guy to me it's cheaper if I just called Roadside Assistance. :)
which was true.... the parts dept sold it for $135. Roadside Assistance guy
came out in their spanking new G550 rescue vehicle(!) and installed the battery
in my garage. only charged me $120.

IIRC, the Roadside Assistance rules have changed so that unless you are the original owner or you bought the car from an authorized MB dealer, you are not covered anymore.

But you can always try. The number is 1-800-FOR MERCEDES.

Also, some roadside service centers (usually run by dealers) will actually come out and replace a battery for just the cost of the battery - no labor. It depends on that local service center. It's worth a call. If you DIY, you have to reset ESP (turn the steering wheel lock to lock) and reset the auto-close windows and sunroof (press and hold the buttons in the close position for several seconds after the glass closes).

I would be very careful doing that sort of thing. MBZ electronics are very "sensitive" and it's very easy to fry a SAM. Resetting the windows, sunroof and ESP takes about two minutes and costs nothing. Replacing a SAM requires several hours at the dealer and is an expensive part.

I guess I still don't see the issue. To me, all of this juggling of batteries just seems more troublesome than the two minutes it takes to reset the windows, sunroof and ESP. And if you call MB Roadside Assist to replace the battery, they'll do that for you. (assuming your vehicle qualifies for Roadside or your local dealer still does battery replacements even if you don't).

My thoughts exactly. I just bought a new batter for my 05 and will change it tomorrow. I'm not going to juggle with the batteries, chargers or what ever. I'll just remove the old one and install the new and then rest everything, if needed. Shouldn't take too long.

We'll see how it goes.
