It is almost time for my first oil change for the CDI. I've been searching the forum and have found insane amounts of conflicting information on motor oil for the CDI. Currently I am planning on purchasing Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40 oil for my car. I also considered the following oils:

Amsoil Eurocar 5w40, meets 229.1, 229.3, 229.5, and 229.51 list on their website but MB mentions nothing about it.

TOTAL Quartz Energy 9000 5W40

If you could, post below what oil and weight you use in your CDI? This will help future posters have a concise place to see what CDI owners use as of 2011.

Thanks!

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40

Ditto on that.. It is available at my dealershp for $5.25 /qt at the parts dept (Raleigh, NC)..
They charge $11.00 /qt if they put it in the car for you.. Gotta love that labor rate..

Any oil that meets the 229.51 spec will work.
Hey, we beat the brakes off of this topic about 2 months ago. There was some good information shared and you might gain better traction using the search..

Super neutron atomic royal purple Z-Max Amsoil

Sorry for that funky title. Sometimes I can't help but be a knucklehead.

Mercedes says that mobil-1 10W-40 is good for 8500 miles and Mobil-1 10W-40 formula M is good for 12,500 miles. Don't you think that if some other oil gave two mpg and had no drawbacks that Mercedes would use it?

I don't mess with fancy spiels. I get my formula M from the dealer.

( or was that 5W-40?),

I got lost on this awhile back.

I use the Mobil 1 0-W40 European Car formula. It has all the specs that MB
requires even with the latest updated fluid sheets. I was -16ÂşF here last night
so the 0 weight oil will lubricate a bit faster than the 5 or 10 weight.
When run out of the ) weight I may switch the 5 weight M formula.
At this point both the dealer and MB tell me the oil I am using is fine and is
not going to cause any issues if a major part fails that might get goodwill.

I will have some Blackstone tests back in a few weeks with oil that went
12 months and 13,800 miles. I will post the results.

This is a bit of a simplistic explanation, but here goes:

MB229.5 was the oil spec for pre-BlueTec CDI engines. Far as I'm concerned, satisfying the spec is more important than who actually labeled the stuff. Besides, some labels are regional. Hence the Mobil 1 0W40 ECF that currently in my 2006 CDI. That's what was easiest for me to get. My own research reveals that - with the correct filter - that stuff is good for a 13,000 mile change interval.

MB229.51 is formulated for engines with particulate filters, in most cases 2007 and later BlueTecs. And it's backward compatible to earlier CDIs. That's why I have 3 cases of Mobil 1 5W40 ESP Formula M in my garage for the next two oil changes. Again my own research, but I'm considering this stuff - with the right filter - good for a 20,000 mile interval

Rotella T is 229.5 compatible however I believe the service interval is less than ESP.

No 229.5 or 229.51 Mobil 1 Oil comes in a 5 or 4 quart jug.
Good price but check the label.

Pep boys Auto Parts sometimes runs a 5 individual quart special sometimes. Mobil 1 ESP Included.
$29 or $39 with filter(Non Mercedes spin on only)

Until MB warranty is up, I go to my dealer for oil changes, brake flushes and transmission service. I use my MBCA card for 15% off. Will do my own after extended warranty ends. Just an easy way to have no warranty questions concerning vital services.

I used Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Oil on my last change the other day. The spec on the back of the bottle is listed as 228.31 but MB shows it as an acceptable oil to use.

I plan on buying oil online for my next change that is 229.51. The MPG stayed the same and no issues on power.

I am having issues finding the right oil filter online. The dealer wanted $22 and I found a Mann filter for $10...by typing E320 CDI Filter in Google. I can't find a cross-ref on the part number though. My Google Fu is weak today :(
