First of all I did a search and found some but limited imformation on this subject.
I have a 2003 ML500 with 87k on it. It has ran fine with no issues until last week after a short drive .I was out of it for 15 minutes or so and when I got back in it would turn over but not fire up. I turned the key off to stop the auto start cycle and tried it a second time, still N/G.After several attempts I tried a second key and it started up but had a check engine light. It did the same thing the next day with the first key so I felt it may be a key issue so we just used the other key .After a short time and a few starts the check engine light went away.Yesterday my wife called and said it did it again after a short drive and sitting for 10-15 minutes or so and this time with the i thought good key. The first 2 times it did it I did not know to look at the tach needle to check if the CPS was reading so when she called me I asked her to try it again and tell me if the tach needle would move or not.It started up but the check engine light was on again.

When I got home I drove it and tried to get it to do it a gain. After a few drives the check engine light went away.
I did not know to look at the tach at first but I do think I remember seeing it bounch a little the first time it failed to start. Thanks to the search I now know what to look for the next time it does it.

I have a friend that has a code reader and if it will stay active long enough we can read the code.
Any helpful information would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

Paul, the best thing to do is see what codes are stored. The CEL does not have to be lit to get results, nor does the engine have to be running.

In all probability you might have a P0335 (CKP Sensor) code stored and because the problem corrected itself, the light extinguished. See what is stored and post back.

Hello Paul,

Get the codes and post here - It's certainly sounding like a crankshaft position sensor issue

The check engine light does not need to be on for codes to be present.

Try to obtain the OBDII code(s) during the 'crank but no start' episodes.

Good luck!

i would:
record all codes then
clear all codes then
** borrow the reader and keep it in the car ** (i.e dont just read the codes at your buddy's place and drive away...)
that way you can catch your car in the act with the appropriate codes to the issue (if any)

As others have said, read the codes.

Instead of borrowing your buddy's unit, go to Amazon and buy a little basic unit for $40, toss it under the seat. If you own an MB and have any mechanical inklings you NEED to own one. They are posted on the forum or you can search for them on the site.

I personally would not just clear the codes unless you have lots of them; as problems rectify they will clear themselves over several start/stop/drive cycles. Moreover if you do get one of the Crank Position Sensor codes, just replace it. They fail all the time and for the bit of expense and labor involved you're not gambling on being stranded somewhere.

Thanks for all the advice so far.I will borrow the one my buddy has and also order me one because I agree there is a need for one.
OK lets assume it is the sensor, where is the best place to get one.I know where to get Porsche parts but the M-class is kinda new to me and I do not want to go to the dealer.
Also I think at these miles from what I have read it is a good idea to go ahead and replace it anyway.
Anyone have a blow up diagram of it handy?
Thanks again for the quick information.Kinda funny how if a poster gives the proper info (model,miles,etc.etc.) AFTER doing a search how happy people are to help out.

The search buttons will help you with finding a DIY for it. It's in the plane of the flywheel on the top/back/driver's side of the engine. I've not done one on an ML and have heard there are access issues, but on the sedans (which can be tight) it's not too hard. The biggest problem is that you can see it or feel it, but not both, so you kind of end up working blind. If you don't find a good DIY for the ML chassis you can look at the ones in the W210 stickies, I did one with some pictures that will at least help you find yours.

If you want it right away, I'd suggest the dealer. More expensive but you're sure of what you're getting. Otherwise online my favorite place is autohausaz.com, quality parts, great prices, free shipping if you spend $50. For that matter you could buy it from them on two day shipping, it's still cheaper than the dealer. :)

Last, please click user cp and add your vehicle and location to your profile as that is often useful information.
