1996 S420 Rear Doors won't open

The left side passenger door suddenly wouldn't open from outside or inside (door handles pull normally, but no latch 'click') and a few months later the right side has the same symptom. I wasn't too concerned at first as there are rarely any other passengers but need to work on this now that the weather is cooperating. Any suggestions would be helpful or any tips on removing the inner door panel to get at the 'works' without buggering it up.

My 1993 300se salvage parts car seems to have developed a similar situation. I can’t remember when it happened, but I tried opening rear doors and couldn’t even get the rear doors unlocked. Are your doors unlocking?

Yes, the vacuum locks seem to work -at least the buttons all rise and fall together. I'm going to recheck the rear door safety system (child lock?). Maybe that's the problem.
