Hi i'm looking for some information on swapping my w201 (2.0 automatic) for a manual 2.8 m104. i have the m102 2.0 in the car as is and i have heard that the problem with having the smaller motor rather than the 2.3 or 2.6 is that the steering box will cause a problem when fitting the engine? And if so is there no way around it? Maybe a steering unit from a w210?

i have found the engine for a decent price with a gearbox, driveshaft, and supposedly everything on the engine

This is my first real project so go easy on me hehe 😅

Palli, you're in the correct forum. My typo error corrected (w210 ===>w201)

You're in good hands here. :)

I think you meant steering box/column from a w201 (not W210) M103 is what you meant. I suppose that would work, I'm not sure why the 2.0 steering column is different than 2.3 or 2.6.
Basically, I think nearly everything under the hood would be swapped out in this case. True?

No i meant the R&P from a w210. Someone said on another forum that the stearing box is diffrently placed on the 2.0 and the best option would be a rack and pinion maybe its bullshit but i will find out soon 😅

And yes mostly everything will be swapped out under the hood 😁

The steering box is in fact in a different location on the M102 cars versus the 6-cylinder M103 cars. The secondary firewall and motor mounts are also positioned differently to accommodate the extra length of the M103.

It's not impossible to do at all, you just have more prep work to do than you would if you started with a car that came with the 2.6.

If local regulations allow, you could keep is a 4-cylinder and go for the M111K, and basically get a 2.3L, 16-valve motor, with a supercharger.

As in an m111.975, from an slk230?
What about the rest of the ignition and hardware for this?

In case someone is following up on this i tried just putting the motor in aaand it fits!!! No matter how i lean it back and forth the steering box is not touching anything, the engine mounts are in the correct place it and it has like a 2-3 cm gap from the starter. i dont think i need to do anything to the firewall.

If it fits, it sits!! Nice!

I think the M104 may actually be a bit narrower than the older M103, but I'm not entirely sure. I don't have both side by side to measure, and my M103 car is sitting up at our shop.

Are you doing some work to yours?

It could be that its narrower 🤔 a couple of other threads said that it would not be possible to put a m104 in where a m102 sat without changing steering boxes and whatnot and that the motor mounts would have to be moved maybe they were mixing the m103 to the m104?

It literally looks like they just took everything from the w201 and put it the same way into the w124. up to this point everything has fit, clutch and brake pedals just went in on the same mounts as before also the gear shifter and also the gearbox from the m104 fits onto the m102 engine.

Hey man, I know it's not a direct comparison but I'm swapping my 190 M102 for a M104.99x (3.2L) and I'm just wondering if your 190E has come along great. I've gotten a bit discouraged as a mechanic told me that this swap is near impossible because I'm trynna fit an engine that requires a lot of electronics to a car that came with a conventional carbureted engine. Just need to hear a success story I guess.

holy resurrection batman ))) this thread is 2 years old ))
but nonetheless .. the mechanic did warn you correctly, the electric part will be the most challenging, but nothing is impossible, just depends how much time, money and expertise you are willing to invest into it, you will need the M104.99x from a live donor with all the electronics and wire harness and so on
