05 E320 CDI Water pump failure, anything else I should replace while I'm in there.

After getting back from the lake yesterday, my car said "check coolant level" right as I was pulling in the garage. Sure enough, I could see pooled coolant down in the belly pan. After putting my car up on the ramps and taking the belly pan off, I could tell the leak is coming from the water pump on my CDI at 68,000 miles.

While I am replacing the pump, are there any other parts worth replacing while I'm down there for preventative maintenance measures? Idle pulley, any other pulleys or belts?

The reason I ask is from back in my Audi days (interference engine) when your water pump went, you might as well replace the timing belt (Audi's timing belts are prone to breaking after 72K miles), accessory belts, thermostat, and tensioners.

Serpentine belt and Thermostat would be my choice Unless the tensioner is getting noisy I would wait on that. You never know if you are going to get a part thats going to last any longer than whats in there.

Here is a quick update: I spend some time last night diagnosing the car. The coolant leak is clearly coming from the water pump. I ran the car and just way coolant seaping from the shaft area of the pump. Also, it looks like the pulley that connects to the pump has a fair amount of wobble and play to it so the serpentine belt will need to be replaced for sure, along with that pulley. I did replace the thermostat a couple months ago, so that's good. I also verified that the t-stat wasn't leaking.

Does anyone have the part numbers for the following:
05 E320 CDI:
Water pump:
Gasket for water pump:
Serpentine belt:
Whatever that pulley is that attached to the water pump:
tensioner, it sounds noisy:

Feel free to PM the part numbers if you dont feel comfortable on posting them. Thank you for the help folks. This is the first repair Ill have done on my CDI other than the t-stat, filters, and oil changes. 68K miles, I thought I could sneak by longer than that.

Nevermind on the part numbers, I subscribed to MB EPCnet and found the following part numbers using that and mercedespartscomplete.com

Water pump: 613-200-0901 GRAF brand
Gasket for water pump: 611-201-0280
Serpentine belt: 014-997-0692 Continental brand.
Tensioner which comes with the pulley: 611-200-0570 CRP brand

Update: got the job done and the water pump was toast.

I have a quick update on the water pump on my 05 CDI w/ 68k miles. Sure enough, the water pump was toast. I could see the coolant seeping from the water pump when the car was running, also the bearings had failed so bad in the pump, the pulley connected to the water pump was not spinning correctly on its axis. There was a slight wobble to it. Good thing the serp belt didn’t go, taking out the fan and other expensive, under the hood bits.

I contacted the dealer asking for a quote to replace the water pump, serp belt, and associated pulleys. $1600 bucks, no thanks! I sourced all the parts myself and the grand total for parts came to around $250 with MB coolant (Autohausaz.com, mercedespartscomplete.com, and parts.com). I then contacted my local indy shop and they replaced the following parts (see below) for $300 dollars, gave me a loaner Audi A4, and got my car back to me in less than 24hrs.

Water pump part # 6132000901
Pump pulley 6132050210
Thermostat 6462000015
Belt tensioner 6462000570
V-Ribbed belt 0149970692
Tightener pulley 0002020019
Coolant hose 6132030382
Water pump gasket 6112010280

Car is running great, no leaks, and a $550 bill is a lot easier to swallow than $1600. Big thanks to my wife who let me drive the Accord while the Benz was out of service, waiting for the parts to arrive. Good think she works 0.5 miles from our house. Thanks to all the folks that gave me help in this thread and PM'd me some very helpful pdf files and tips.

You did the right thing, welcome to my world, that is what I do but most of the time I will do the work myself. $300+ is way better than $1600.

I couldn't get the www.mercedespartscomplete.com site to come up. Is this the best place to get the water pump parts? IsBeck Arnley or GMP any good?

Thanks for the help,

David
I'm looking at the Graf on Amazon or the Klarius at RMEuropean. Graf is a little more than Klarius. I know Graf from the BMW world that they make decent units. Never heard of Klarius.

Please do not put the Beck/Arnley or GMP pump in that car. They are marginal quality parts.
I would look for a Graf or Saleri pump. They will be around $150, but they are well made.
Do not get the pump from Deutscheparts on eBay. They sell absolute junk.

The best price I saw on an OEM MB part from a dealer is $244.

Here's what I am coming up with so far in my quest for parts.

Coolant/gal $23.73 Autohaus
Water pump Graf $137.95 Thepartsbin *appears to come w/gasket
Gates belt tens. $101.78 Thepartsbin lifetime warr
pump pulley $90.95! What! Auto part warehouse Really? for a stamped disk?
Dayco serp belt $25.58 Thepartsbin
Dayco idler pulley $35.35 Thepartsbin
Upper hose $30.95 Thepartsbin
Thermostat Wahler $32.00 or Replacement $15.00 both 87 degree Thepartsbin

Anything I'm missing? No gasket sealant need, right? The $90 pump pulley has me scratching my head. It appears to be a stamped piece with no bearings or any other parts?
Parts Bin - Auto Parts and Accessories Catalog - 2005 Mercedes Benz E320 Water Pump Pulley Stock Replacement
And will I need any shims?

Thanks!

Did some work on the Benz today and had a chance to remove the fan shroud so I could get to the power steering pump and reservoir. Since I had to loosen the drive belt I figured it would be a good time for a pulley inspection. I recently watched this video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V14WOUQURbw

It's based on a gas engine but he gives a good idea on what a failing pulley sounds like. Here are my inspection results.....

I found 2 idler pullies and also the tensioner pulley that need to be replaced in the near future. I've had a bit of a sound coming from the front of the engine so I'm glad now that I know what it's coming from and can plan it soon. I have 146K miles on my car so if you have this kind of mileage on yours, it would be prudent to plan to replace yours also. Since you have to remove the fan shroud, the water pump(total coolant flush/coolant reservoir replacement) might just as well be replaced since you will have everything out, and perhaps a new drive belt also.

Fellas, since I'm planning an idler pulley and belt tensioner replacement in the near future I wanted to see if these two part numbers are for the same part:

000-202-09-19(This one is the one the Mercedes parts department gave me recently when I called them)

000-202-00-19(This is the one that comes up on Autohaus AZ website when I search the number up above)

Both of them are pullies, but I'm unsure if they are actually the same thing. I don't want to make a costly and time consuming mistake :)

Thanks!

same thing, the 000-202-00-19 is the old part # replaced by 000-202-09-19

Mike,

Autohaus AZ has it for 3-4 dollars cheaper per pulley(I need two) than KO performance. I mostly try to go with Autohaus since once I'm over $60.00 in product it's free shipping. Only thing is KO performance has 7% sales tax(since I'm located in Florida) and I'll have an extra shipping charge from them so the cost per pulley might end up being 50% higher than AutohausAZ.

Maybe I'll try to find another vendor like Partsgeek or RockAuto and see if they have the pullies with the newest revision part. I have been ordering and preparing for a rather large suspension job coming up really soon so I've been ordering parts from quite a few vendors lately. By the way I will only be using a good quality reputable manufacturer(INA) for this item and not the JUNK from URO parts!

John,

I've not ordered from them before. The last times I have looked on their website for suspension related parts they were more expensive than some other vendors. I will try them on these particular items. Honestly I would rather give my money to them vs. Autohaus or other vendors since Pelican supports the Benz community. Price however must be in line with what is reasonable however.
