I drove the '85 300D intentionally low on fuel this week to see if my solder repair on the sending unit corrected the reserve light. I drove the car until the fuel gauge registered just slightly below empty, but the light never came on.
Got a little nervous that I was getting low. So, I refueled car, and I put about 16.5 gallons of fuel in the car. I believe I can put 21 total in it. So, I panicked early.
My question is, when does your light come on in relation to where the fuel needle registers? I was under the impression that it didn't come on until you had about 3 gallons of fuel left in the tank. If that is the case, then I didn't drive it long enough, but also if that is the case, it would've been well below empty when the light came on.
The reserve light does come on when you cycle the key switch as it should.
