I found this car on Craigslist and I've got an opportunity to see it tomorrow. Before I (possibly) waste my time, what can you tell me about it? It looks alright from the pictures but I'm wondering whether it would really get 45mpg. Also, exactly how slow will it be? Just very slow accelerating, or too slow to take on the interstate safely?

Also how do I tell which engine it has? The ad doesn't specify if it's a 2.0 or 2.2.

I need something reliable that gets good gas mileage and is reasonably fun to drive. This is the best I've seen online so far since all the old BMWs are rusted out :(

Since it's a standard tr, it could get 45 mpg or close to it, depending on your driving habits. The 190 2.0 ltr diesels were not sold in America, so it's probably a 2.2, but you should call and ask the seller or look on the ID plate when you inspect the car. As for speed, don't look to run with the Jap V-6 cars, but once you get under way, it'll do ok. My '85 2.0 ltr auto has been pretty reliable so far and definitely fun to drive.

Hard to tell from the picture and what the seller said, but it looks like a good car.

Look for rust in the normal areas, check oil blow-by, see the engine shuts off when you turn the key to the off position, and oil cap for any signs of a bad hg.

It won't be speedy, but the mileage is great. The diesels have a calming effect while driving, so you won't feel the need to speed anyway

Realistic fuel mileage is low 30's around town, and high 30's highway. If you coast in neutral down hills on the expressway with the AC off maybe you'll break 40. EPA ratings 27 city/36 highway, similar to MB info.

That car will NOT have leather as is listed- MBTex only in the USA 190 D.

Check the automatic climate control for functioning AC. That car had/has r12- is it original or has someone converted it to r134?

Check the ball joints, front & rear flex disks, and glow plug engine start circuit. Common problems are broken window regulators, and creaking door check stops. Common to have rust at jack points and rocker panels as mentioned.

This engine is an iron block and aluminum head, so it can blow the headgasket. That happened to my brother's 84 5 speed. Typically the blown gasket dumps oil and/or coolant into cylinder 1, and out the exhaust. Not so typical to have oil build up in the coolant as seen in the expansion tank.

The miles are not listed, but regardless, that 28 year old car is going to need suspension rubber soon if not already done- strut mounts, sway bar bushings, control arm bushings, motor mounts, transmission mounts, diff mounts, rear subframe mounts, & flex disks as already mentioned. Historically, this is the first commercially sold vehicle with a multi-link rear suspension, and that means 20 additional bushings to go bad.

0-60 in 12 secs or so, it's fun to shift & drive around town or country roads, but you must learn to maintain speed. You can not floor it at highway speeds to get out of trouble, and it's slow to get up to speed on the entrance ramp. 72 hp, 96 torque.

I enjoy my 190D 5 speed, and have owned it for 26 years. It's the family back up loaner vehicle now, but it refuses to die.

Around town, I get ca. 34 mpg, an easy 40 on the interstate (at 65mph) in my '85 2.0 ltr Euro auto (72K). I do drive conservatively, so that helps. Since I have bought a '77 300D and '96 E320 in the past few months, I'm going to sell the 190D soon (too many cars!).

I get 44+ MPG highway, with an extra 5 lbs. tire pressure. At recommended tire pressure, 40 MPG when driving hard. MT5.

Price should be $1500 max, in my opinion; unless very low miles and a lot of recent maintenance.

As stated above, expect to replace a large amount of rubber and plastic. The only plastic which lasts is the MB-Tex seats, which have no breathability.

I had a 1998 Automatic and got in the high 40s and into the low 50s on the HWY. It was a great car, decent pickup once you are up to speed 40mph or faster but getting there can be painful. Pulling out with a lot of oncoming traffic can be a bit nerve racking but all told one of the best cars I ever owned. I agree $1,500 is the most you should pay for it.
