[W246] HIGH PRESSURE IN Diesel FUEL TANK

Good morning,

my B180 1.8CDI BLUEFFICENCY 80KW AUTOMATIC literally started to "throw up" diesel from the tank cap.
I was stopped waiting for a friend, car running to keep the air conditioning on, when I got out I noticed that droplets of diesel were falling from the cap. I instinctively opened the cap, to understand what had happened and as soon as I opened the cap the car literally started throwing up diesel fuel, I then closed it promptly, and I lost a few liters ... I turned off the car and waited a few minutes, so I tried again to open the cap and again the diesel started to come out. The tank was full with about 50L of diesel, and after trying to open it twice I think I will have lost at least ten (10) liters ...
It seems that there is a high pressure inside the tank that causes the diesel to escape.

Have you ever had similar experiences?
This is a video of the problem:

Thanks for your advice,

Andrea

The vent valve will need cleaning out , but if there is no change , then you will need to replace it
Hi plinker17722,

thanks for the suggestion but in the scheme I can’t see the vent Valve

Hi Andrea, i am having the same problem with my b200 1.8 cdi (2014). I have 165.000 km by now and i recently cleaned up one of engines beck. My car was at full stop and i noticed a leaking under my cars engine. Mercedes technicians told my that it was my 4th beck that was leaking. After searching farther while trying to depressurised the system we opened the cup and happened the same thing! Fuel came out like your video.
It would be so helpful if you share with us were did you spot the problem and how did you fix it.
Thank U in advance

Hi I actually have the same issue too. The car is at the garage right now with them trying to identify the issue. As you state I don't think my car has the valve as such... it's throwing diesel out the filler and leaking from the front too...

looking for some help with this issue it appears to be quite common. It's quite scary to see fuel coming back out the filler hole.

----------- edit -----
Just to add to this. They have released all of the injectors so the pressure shouldn't be cycling back into the tank...

the issue however is still present and they are saying there is definitely some sort of breather or valve which is the issue? Can anyone advise , possible location? Or fix where the start? Thanks

This issue didn't work fyi. Any other members able to advise. They've had the fuel tank off and the wheel arches...

They say it's some sort of breather in the engine? Anyone...
I got my b180 from shop back on monday. They found 2/4 leaking injectors and vorn out tips in all of the 4 injectors. I have in my odometer 178tkm. No more bubbling in the tank ;).

hi all, had the exact same problem, replaced the valve between the engine spreaders and replaced the injector return pipe, made no difference, it pressurised again after refueling. found this page and got the injectors checked, no 3 had a leak on the seat, no 4 was replaced, no more pressure in the tank, but since that the car ticks over fine, but revving it causes the engine to run on even when turned off with the key, since it pressurised the 2nd time fuel has gone through the exhaust and intercooler, the diesel has been drained as much as possible but still lots of smoke and the run on issue still persists. anyone have any idea why or what to do next ? the garage are stumped at the moment to why its still doing it

many thanks

Problem solved..: the problem is really this: The inlet/filler neck to the diesel tank coms into the tank at the lower 1/4 of the tank - and the eir has to vent out a breather on top of the tank. this breather is closed by a floater with a membrane at the top, and a little spring also giving some lift towards closure. This closing mechanism is too strong or seals too well, and the only way the tank can breath when this is closed - is through the filler neck, which comes out of the tank at 1/4 - meaning diesel is pushed out.. How we solved this.. We took the tank down, (not too much of a job) and took the tank armature/pump out of the tank. then we could see a white plastic thing at inside end of the breather line, and we could easily remove a lid at the end of it, and get the floater with the membrane on top of it out. I choosed to throw the spring away, and I also made a small cut to the membrane - which ensures a small leakage thath prevents pressure to build up. One could also conside just to push a needle through it. This solved the problem on our car. I could also mention that we did a lot of testing on the breather when we had the tank down. And we could easily recreate the problem - breather sucked stuck and only way to breathe was through filler neck.. What a mess, and what a poor design! One have been quite remote to reality to design a fuel tank with the inlet coming in from down under.. Good luck you all! greetings from Norway - sorry about my poor English - it is not my first/main langague.
