Hi guys,

As you may know already, the concern is about a 2003 model, E220 CDI, W211 - Avantgarde.

Well, I experienced problems about a 1-2 months ago. The car suddenly lost power. No power on any gear at all, and with a strange sound. A deep sound without any turbo-boost at all. It was like the engine didn't get any air at all.

I sent it to a official Mercedes retailer and workshop, and they read the codes;

EGR had to be changed, but since it cost 1500$ (live in a expensive country), I waited since they said that they could clean it and it would work for a time, but it had to be replaced anyways. So yeah, they engine was almost like new after cleaning (very smooth and good feedback from engine etc..).

But at that time, there was no power at all. Had to stop, since it couldn't get above 30 km/h, and wait a long time for the engine to get abit cold so I could drive home.

Well, yesterday I took the car fro a long trip (200 km), and on the way back home, the car lost torque. I could drive 120 km/h to 140 km/h, but no chance getting the engine to rev past 2500/3000 RPM.

Very strange sound, like the turbo is not working. No black smoke, though, only lack of torque and power. It doesn't seem like the problem I had with the EGR, so what could this be? Maybe MAF or something?

The thing is when I filled it up with gas and let air come in through the gas pin, after I started the car, it worked just fine. Also if I put the key in and out 4 times from the recognision, it will work just fine.

I will have to change the EGR for sure, but seems like another problem this one.

Guys, any help would be appreciated ALOT. It's a long post, but I felt it was neceassary to clearify what and how the problem occures.

Anyways, any input or recommendation would help out alot. The car has gone around 190.000 km.

It goes in limp mode to protect the engine, thus why no turbo and no rpm higher than 3000, also no downshifting. If your EGR is acting up but not completely gone bad turning the car off and on will fix it, same effect by inserting and removing the key - system checks all the components and if they pass will start in normal mode, but if see something during the operation will switch back to limp mode. Eventually will need to be replaced to be fixed.

But the symphtoms are totally different from the EGR problem. With EGR, maximum was 2000 RPM, and couldn't go over 30 km/h at all. Black smoke, and bad in general.

The problem now though has some of the same sympthoms, but I can get up to 130 km/h, but no torque. Kickdown or go below 2500 RPM is not possible. All though when accelerating, you can get around 3000 RPM at most, especially when shifting with the tiptronic (manual mode).

I recon the EGR, though.. Maybe the sympthoms are less because it got cleaned? Maybe they are occuring, but not so bad as before since it got cleaned? My guesses might be that. Because when they cleaned the EGR, it was filled with so much soot/grime that they couldn't believe it. Totally stuck with soot. Oh, well. I really don't know actually.

Thanks for your input!

CEL - Check Engine Light.
EGR valve has a step motor that moves the valve up or down and sends info to the ECU for valve position. When your engine is cold the valve opens close to 90 or maybe 100% and as the engine warms up it will start closing . At highway speed with engine up to temperature EGR should be closed, but if is not will sent info to the ECU and will trigger limp mode - lower turbo boost to compensate for extra exhaust gases passing through EGR.
You can unplug it but this will trigger CEL, some people say that beside the light car runs fine and light goes away after you plug it back, just to check if this is your problem. You also may want to check this info if you do not want to spend big $$$.

Ok, thanks a lot!

I checked ebay, and the EGR-valve costs around 200 euros, which is extremely cheap considering it costs 1500 in the official mercedes workshop here. I might just buy it, since I have to replace it anyways.

Strange thing is some sell it for 500-600, but this guy sold it for 200. Has enough feedback to believe it, though, and ebay is pretty safe since you get your money back if anything happens so.

I really hope the EGR is the problem!

I might try drive without it, but can it damage anything? Is it completely safe?

have you tried driving with EGR disconnected? If not try it for a couple of weeks.
If problem vanishes then it's def. EGR and you might want to consider installing EGR Delete Mod.
Speaking of this Delete mod. today I finally connected mine just to try it, in opposit to Isstay's experience it seems my MPG actually improved, acceleration at take off and overall shifting got smoother, but.. on my 75 miles run on interstate after one of the hard "pedal to the metal"..all of a sudden I got CEL...... no Limp Home Mod, no loss or noticeable change in performance.. strong pick Up , acceleration and smooth gear shifting. I just kept driving.. got home just 30 min ago.. will do few engine starts and short runs around the town to see if CEL will clear itself..if not will disconnect EGR Delete Mod and plug EGR back to see if it will make CEL disappear.
Will report my findings in a day or two.
