We were shown this video in my auto tech class on safety, it was an r129 I believe, they had a mechanic from MB talk about how the rollbar that pops up after sensing the car flipping saved that guys life.

Yes... R129 has a hydrolic pump that throws the bar up in a fractions of a second in case of emergency.

An accelrometer under the rear seat detects combined vertical, lateral, and twisting movement force (indicating roll over) and sends the order to the hydrolic system to pop the bar above the passenger's heads (as quick as the airbags deploy).

If i remember correctly, this system is disabled when the hard top is on, so if i am not mistaking, the removable hard top takes all the credit for the amazing peroformance we saw in the video...

it is a 129!!! at 5 seconds when it in upside down you can see it does only have 2 doors.

good eyes!

it is a R129 with the hard top, forget the fact that the car is a convertible, the roof performed rather well for even a Sedan with A B C pillars setup. but to see a DETACHABLE hard top roof take this kind of beating...

one word...WOW...

My next car will be a Silver Arrow...

would like to have seen how a c140 wouldve handled it! the guy may have just gotten up and out as if no problem, though in doing so he is probably under the influence of a tremendous amount of adrenaline and may be aggravating potential injuries. either way, i would surely have done the same...

Simply amazing video. It's a testament to the amount of thought and foresight that went into these cars.

That announcer on the other hand, was simply annoying. I absolutely *HATE* those "scariest videos" shows. Everything is always so over-dramatized. Where does that guy get his info from anyway? The car couldn't handle the speed? Come on. . . It's a freakin' Mercedes!

IMHO, that accident was caused by driver error, pure and simple. He took the corner a bit too fast, the back end stepped out, and he either over corrected or lifted his foot off the throttle too fast. The rest is on the video tape. I'd wager that if the car had been equipped with ESP the crash would have never happened.

Funny how this clip always shows up on forums as being the car the forum talks about. I have seen this clip on both a BMW e39 forum, as well as an Audi forum.

I agree the crash is a testament of engineering....But whos?!?

The safety video was produced by a company called Nova if you guys care to find it, you get to listen to an MB mechanic talk about how stuff works and see other crash tests, made me proud to own a Benz.
