I have a pretty clean 1987 W124 sedan that I’m debating modding into an HPDE car and want to do some body mods - mainly gen 1 AMG bumpers and side skirts. Saw some youtube clips of a guy modding his w124 and it inspired me a bit.

Anyway, didn’t know of anyone heard of this website or if it is legit:

amgcarpartsforsale.com

thoughts?

Also, interested in any feedback anyone has for getting bigger wheels on the ride and lowering it. Would prefer not to roll fenders, but instead find decent wide fenders online. Alternatively, does anyone know the best wheel size to go with here and how
rubbing will be an issue?

AMG body kit - the best I've seen personally are the one's made in Taiwan. Mold injected and not the crap fiberglass ones coming from eastern EU or similar. They sell the sizzle and get you to drool on their photos.
Aliexpress has the decent mold injected kits, but be mindful, the shipping/tariff charges, your 🤡 show guberment will most likely be a deal killer for you.

Bigger wheels? on a standard 87 W124? and lowering? with no fender rolling??
hahaha
well, make sure you have a good dental plan too, with the bigger wheels n tires.

There are plenty of older threads with the same pipe dreem you're asking about.
Community search, at the top of the page is your homework assignment.

You'll spend more on parts and labor, than what your ride is worth, imo.
my 2 cents

But hey, your ride, your choice.

If money is no object, find yourself a w124.034 or better yet, an .036

Please refrain from political commentary here.

I came to the exact same conclusion... you would have to spend a LOT more than the car is worth for something that looks good - trying to look like a sports car, but wont perform as well. I am personally a big fan of the OZ 3-piece AMG wheels. They look great on these cars. They cost over $3k alone if you can find good ones.

According to my research 17" wheels - 8" wide max is all you can do without issues - you may experience a little loss in ride quality - but it's still acceptable. Completely agree on the 400E and 500E variants. These cars were extensively and specifically engineered and modified for performance - from suspension, wider body, flares, engine and more... so why not just get one of those? Of course IF money is no object, anything is possible - it just doesn't make sense economically.

After a bit of dreaming, I decided to keep by E320 sedan stock and get it completely sorted, and just look for a 400/500E that looks and performs like a sports car. There is something to be said about staying pure to the design and not try to make a great cruising sedan look - but not perform like a sports car.

^ Agreed.

Even 8" wide rims with 215 tires is going to be stretched AND still rubbing (at the rear, poking out at the front*) with an ET of 35-40. Next size 225s definitely will not work, look correct, even if lowered.
17s are the max. 16s are good and the ride is exceptional too. I have 17s sitting in storage, ready to roll, but have never used them. Maybe this summer I'll swap and try. Maybe.

Tire sizing on rims

*One could use fender spacers up front. The amg spacers available are typically 1/2" spacers - I went with DIY delrin spacers - 3/4" on my w124s (as shown with 7" wide ET 35 on 215s). Any wider and they will poke out.

And even with fender spacers (up front), ones still needs to content with the 'ripple effects' of the rest of the area surrounding the fender well liner and front bumper. You stretch the front wider, which means everything else around it is affected. Inner liner along the fender edge doesnt line up or seal correctly (requires some plasticweld surgery to 'fill in the gap' and the front bumper end by the fenderwell needs to be spaced out (spread) to align correctly with the fender spacing. And then you have the front corner lights to contend with - you've altered the entire alignment of fit of those corner lights and if you've ever lost one of these at high speed before, doing this alteration requires one to get the front corner alignment/spacing of that area correct for the corner light to fit and snap in properly again, after the fender spacing. A 1/2" fender spacing will do this to you.
None of the DIYers of past have EVER explained or even mentioned these 'ripple effect issues', other than one other well-established w124 owner, posted for viewers to see.
My 3/4" spacing works but to get it all working right and looking oem, you gotta spend the time and effort.

Anything less is hokey, impo.
Do it right, if you're going to to it.

If you want to give it some reasonable/acceptable lowering go with coil cutting.
It works well, and the ride is still very good.

The longer version of the above tariff that affects pretty much what the OP has to buy offshore for his kit.

The "de minimis" exemption, authorized under Section 321(a)(2)(c) of the Tariff Act of 1930, allowed imports valued at $800 or less to enter the U.S. duty-free and with minimal filing requirements. This exemption, also known as Section 321, was raised from $200 to $800 in 2016. It was a key part of the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015.

gone.

OP could obtain the same kit conusa, but likely $$$ withe the crazy markups.
maybe free shipping, but I doubt it, based on it's size n weight.

Thanks for sending this! I’m a little worried that 215s would be too narrow. When you said that the 225’s didn’t drive good, was it because of wheel rub or something else? Did you have to roll the rear fenders too or just the fronts? Did you pop in spacers to do big brakes?

^ speaks from experience (y)

99% of the posters yap crap of wider wheels n tires on w124s
especially those on the reliable fbm mbklubbs

all claiming it works - all things nice n rosy

perhaps if the ride is a sitting garage queen

Turns out that website is super sketchy and doesn’t take credit cards, but does take western union. Sorry for not researching better.

But on the car modification, I’m appreciating all of the feedback. As some context, a friend of mine and I just built a Volvo S70 to compete in the 24 hours of Lemons, and now I’m itching to build my own track car.

With my love of benzes, I thought a modified 300E would be perfect for track days. I was inspired by this guy on youtube:
and realized my 300Echecks a few key boxes for me:

1. Not incredibly heavy
2. Bulletproof drivetrain that is easy to work on
3. Readily available performance aftermarket
4. It doesn’t involve me needing to buy another car, which will result in my wife forcing me to get rid of a car
5. No rust, low mileage (88k) and maintained its whole life
6. It’s a benz!

i would expect to probably have a $10-$15k budget to put into the car over the next two years, so I do know what I’m getting into and also understand that I’ll never see the money again.

i’m guessing the 300E is probably better to just restore and keep as a classic daily than do as a track setup, but the dream was worth holding onto…

except for lower it’s all stock. If you go with a custom wheel I think it’ll fit better with a more precise offset. Sone guys are able to stuff wide tires on these cars. I have no idea how. but with the Amgs you’re stuck with ..37mm I believe. The 17x8 was 35mm so it stuck out more than I wanted. Didn’t look natural. For me all I want it a car that looks good and drives good as a daily. drives exactly like any other e320. no race car.
