Hi Community,
Dana here, again, looking for help, again! We finally obtained a third row seat with belts and hardware to install in our 1985 300TD Wagon that did not have one. I am desperately looking for installation instructions that I can print out so hubby and I can attempt the job. We are old school and do not do so well with digital instructions. So if anyone out there has a set of instructions that I could print please let us know. OH and by the way when I get a second I will post our nightmare of a trip to Boston to buy an 1987 300TD Wagon and the nightmare that began when we stopped in NJ for diesel and the attendant(because you can't pump your own fuel in NJ, state law) put gasoline in my 1985 300TD Wagon. The post I will title Gasoline in my Diesel. I would like to thank the community for any and all help, this community is amazing! So thank you, Sincerely, Dana

Hi Dana - I doubt there is an installation manual for this but if you want, I'll take you through step by step.

1: Did you get everything with the 3rd row seat ? That is the bill of materials should be

  • Bottom (for the derrières) seat and hinges
  • top (for the back) seat and hinges
  • spring loading for bottom seat (its a stiff long wire)
  • seat belt buckles (x2) that sit in the top
  • Bracket that the top seat clips into on the 2nd row seat
  • B pillar trim that has the cut out for the 3rd row seat belts
  • Inserts into B Pillar for the belt ingress / egress
  • 3 row seat belts (mounts behind the B pillar trim)
  • bolt bracket / clips that clip into the chassis all over the place to bolt it all in
  • side brackets that the seats pivot in and res in when down
  • carpet piece that clips over the top
  • stick of wood that sits under the carpet between the top seat when down and second row)

Don't start till you can confirm the above

HELLO tsharkey!
As always you are so helpful, kind and basically amazing. Thank you for getting back to me and the help you are offering to Jerry and I to get our third row seat installed. We will definitely take the help! Would you mind waiting a couple of days for me to reply back to you on the above listed parts? So much is going on today, I am working with the insurance company that represents Sunoco about the "gasoline instead of diesel" nightmare. Our 20 year old cat, Fermie, passed about 2 months ago from a brain tumor, so we got a rescue cat about 10 days ago, a 2 year old cat, MIemie, she is a great cat until 48 hours ago when she stopped playing, eating, drinking and started doing involuntary head twitches, she walks five steps plops down and sleeps which is all she has done for the last 2 days, sleeping, just sleeping. So hopefully after the "remote learning home schooling is done" and after dealing back and forth with insurance company and after getting the cat to the vet, if we can ever get there, we had an 11am appt. but we couldn't get to the Vet location because the police shut down the highway RT.13 to reenact an accident which killed a young man on a motorcycle, how sad. So I am pretty sure we won't be able to get the parts together today. We will work on doing so as soon as we can. Again, Thanks tsharkey, Sincerely, Dana

No problem - I check in daily and am 16hrs ahead of you so if Jerry doesn't mind asking in your afternoon / evening, you'll get me as I am cyber slacking in my morning between doing the stuff that pays the bills !

Hope the cat recovers.
HI tsharkey, we still want to install the third row seat, we just have too much going on right now, then to top off everything, Jerry and I got our second vaccine shot, Mederma, and both are having a terrible reaction to it, horrible bad headahes, slight fever, chills and sore throats. Its better than getting Covid though, anyways when things slow down around here if you don't mind I will reach out to you for help. Thanks SIncerely, Dana

Hi tsharkey, (Hi, the following really isn't about the car, just a tidbit of info on our love of Australia)
My granddaughter, Joslyn, is obsessed with Australia and rightfully so. Back in the 80's Jerry and I were so tired of the crime in the U.S. so we wanted to move to Australia, which turned out to be easier said than done. Went to the Australian embassy in Washington, D.C. to find out how to move there. Lots of hoops to jump through, we basically were told that Australia rules were in place because they didn't want a lot of deadbeats moving there living off of the country without contributing, so smart, the United States needs to get Australia's playbook on that one. Before even thinking about moving there, we had to have a job and housing waiting for us, we also had to have substantial savings in the bank to prove that we could support ourselves( I think they wanted proof of $50,000.in savings) and then we had to have a citizen there vouch for us. We didn't know anyone, but were told that if we secured a job then maybe the owner would vouch for us. So for about 3 months, at least 2-3 times a week, whenever possible, Jerry and I went job hunting at the embassy, at the time we only lived 25 mins away and knew what time of day to go to avoid D.C.'s rush hours. We thought we could easily get a job with our marine background. The jobs for marine mechanics were plentiful but we couldn't get one Australian to take a chance on us, the embassy guy told us that Australians were upset about the Asian influence taking over their jobs, working 80 hour weeks and ruining their laid back way of living. But we were so determined and hopeful to move to Australia, we had a young family and just couldn't fathom raising them in our beloved U.S. because the country we had grown up in, had just gone downhill so hard that we didn't see a future here for our children. Needless to say we never could secure a job, sad, but we don't blame Australians for not taking a chance on us, trust me, we understand completely Jerry and I want to leave the U.S. again, this country is going downhill fast! We both worked so hard all of our lives, we both invested in our governments Social Security retirement, and then find out that, when you retire and are married you only get one retirement fund, we chose Jerry's, so all of my paychecks over all of those years, all the money that I put into my Social Security retirement I will never be able to get a penny of it back! My money goes to supporting illegal immigrants that cross the borders illegally, come into my country illegally. And why wouldn't they? They don't need to worry about working, the U.S. will give them everything they need, housing, food, money and great medical care all for free! All off the back of hard working Americans. If you want to come into my country for opportunities, great, just do it legally. Australia does it right, I dont' understand why the U.S. can't? It would have been great to know you, 40 years ago, maybe you would have vouched for us and we could have been neighbors, lol.:)
Oh another hoop that we had to jump through, age, if you were more than 35 years old, I think it was 35 you couldn't come and live in Australia, no matter what, even if you had all of the other rules covered, and you had to have a clean bill of health also, they didn't want you coming there and living off of free medical care that was offered to Australians citizens, which to us was amazing, free medical? we paid out the wahzoo monthly for medical care insurance and still had big deductibles and co-pays. Jerry and I just talked about this, if we were younger, we would love to live in Australia, still. Lucky you!
I will keep in mind the 16 hour time difference, oh the cat is recovering, thanks for asking! I will get back to you on the seat, I don't think we have all of the parts, going to double check today hopefully
Again, thank you, Sincerely, Dana and family

Hi all - Apologies, have been distracted for a few days.

For the 3rd row seats, you must have
  • Bottom (for the derrières) seat and hinges
  • top (for the back) seat and hinges
  • spring loading for bottom seat (its a stiff long wire)
  • seat belt buckles (x2) that sit in the top
  • Bracket that the top seat clips into on the 2nd row seat
  • C pillar trim that has the cut out for the 3rd row seat belts
  • Inserts into C Pillar for the belt ingress / egress
  • 3 row seat belts (mounts behind the B pillar trim)
  • bolt bracket / clips that clip into the chassis all over the place to bolt it all in
  • side brackets that the seats pivot in and res in when down
  • carpet piece that clips over the top
  • stick of wood that sits under the carpet between the top seat when down and second row)

  1. Remove C Pillar trims Left & Right
  2. Remove Wheel Arch covers Left & Right
  3. Seat belt reel sits underneath the rear side windows between the inner and outer shell. There is a nut welded in place for each
  4. Seat belt bottom anchor is on the floor at the wheel arch - there is a bolt welded there for each - make sure you insert it though the new C pillar before bolting
  5. The hardest part if fitting the belt bracket to the ceiling. I used a needle to establish where in the retaining nut is welded into the rood. Once found, cut the roof lining to allow bolt to access the nut.
  6. Find two philips screws holding rear carpet between 2nd row seats and wells for the 3rd row. Undo and lift out the cover
  7. Add in wood rod between wheel arches closest to the 2nd row seats
  8. Add carpet piece that runs from 2nd row all the way down to the back - It has 4 press studs in it to clip onto the back of the bum seat when it's retracted
  9. Add back the C-Pillar and wheel arches
  10. Remove felt flooring in the two wells that will take the seats when retracted
  11. Add the nut clips in the holes along the left and right sides top of the wells - you will see the cut-outs for them
  12. Use a needle to find the nuts in the back of the "2 seat" 2nd row seat (if a split seat) at the top where the retaining bracket will mount. This is used by the 3rd row back reast to be held in position
  13. Put in the new felt mat for the floor that goes into the wells that accommodate the seats when retracted (replaces that you removed in #10).
  14. Inset the left and right pivot for the back rest of the 3rd row seat into the long black rectangular bracket, bolt the rectangular bracket into the clips you have inserted in #11
  15. Lift up the seal and lock into "up" position with the bracket you have bolted on on #11. The carpet you added in #8 will roll up behind that seat
  16. Screw the front of the bottom part 3rd row seat into position. It has a wooden section covered in vinyl that pops up when lifted into position. That uses a long wire under tension to act as a spring
  17. Lift it into position
  18. VoilĂ  - You have your third row seats
I know it would be easier with pictures and I have written this up from memory - tho I have done it 3 times int he last 20 years.

Let me know how you go and I (or other members with the seats) can post pictures of different parts if visually spatially you need a few more clues (I did 1st time)

You also need the mechanism they slide into from the old backseat (2nd Row). They sit inside the seat, so you will need to skin it to get to the area the mechanism sits in. I would want them as otherwise 2nd row and 3rd row passenger heads will calungle as the mach 1 acceleration and power braking of the trusty OM617 is put to work
