Hello everyone,

My project is to swap my W201 190E 2L 122ch with a M103 to reach around 200hp.
I have the opportunity to swap my M102.962 (2L 122hp) to M103.980 (3L 186hp).
I can have the engine and a manual gearbox for a good price.

I wanna know if some of us already talked about this kinda swap.
I rode lot of swap from a W201 2.6L to a W124 3.0L but never a 2.0L to 3.0L.

Does it feet in a W201 190E 2L bay ?
Do you, guys, have any advices to give for this project ?

Thank you, have a nice day.

Welcome to the forum
(y) (y)For having found the forum section for your car, and a filled out profile.

The forum sections archives have a wealth of DIY / technical information.
When posting, you can also Search the forum archives of your chassis section via the 'Search Community' box on top..

The stickies on top of the 'Welcome' section will help to navigate the site.

Are you good with wiring? Going from my M103 2.6L to the M103 3.0 would be easy.
The early M104 wasn't too hard either (starting with a 6 cyl) and it's a far lighter engine.
Use the search box with 'engine swap' etc.

Thx for your answer,
I was attracted to a M103 because it is old mecanic. Few months ago I was looking for a M104 but it was really expensive.
Maybe I'll bought a M104 instead. I'm going to do some research in my country to find a more affordable M104 engine.

I know a lot of people did this swap before so it'll be easier to have informations.
Thx for informations.

hey maxime, welcome !

course it can be done, its the same bay regardless of the engine it came with, there is simply more work to be done when going m102 > m103.980 then when going m103.943 > m103.980 which is basically a direct bolt on with nearly zero mods necessary
you can also research the m104, but thats even more work, the easiest of those is the m104.980 k-jet, but be warned, that engine is a pain to source parts for, the rarest EZL and kjet out there, except for the cossy
the m104.992 which is HFM is nice, but its a lot of work to adapt, you have to redo your wiring, ecm, etc

Thanks for your help, I rode your tips today and I found a M104 3L for a good price.

But as you said it is a K-jet. Not a problem for me right now, I like old mecanic but it'll be a problem if I'll had a compressor, turbo, or even if I want to do a custom map.
I saw that I can buy a EFI (Injection System) for a m104 3.0L K-jet but, in the end, it'll be more expensive than directly buy a 3.2L or 2.8L.

The engine is cheapier than a 3.2L.

Can you explain what HFM is ?

ah yes, if you want to go that route, then start with the m104 hfm model, a bit more initial work, but less down the line
also the m104 has a much better head, I myself am contemplating one if my block ever goes bad or I cant bring it up to spec

here's a good post on the HFM http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/1723723-post7.html

Thanks again,

I’m about to search a HFM M104 engine.
2 questions are coming :

I saw a post on the web where someone was talking about putting a BMW gearbox by using an adapter. What do you think ? This could bring a 6 speed shift that would be nice and, as they said, it would be easier to find one.

Then the second one is : do you know were I can find a sketch of wiring a m104 in a w201 ?

Thanks guys

I do not mean to be offensive ,but for a guy who cannot work out the firing order for a four cylinder engine , you might be out of your depth in a engine change,
I refer to your post on the ignition layout, your diagram was a work of art ,but totally wrong.
Prove me wrong and do the engine change.

I’m working on it, I just messed up with the ignition order because the engine didn’t want to start even trying to solve the problems... I’ve had days of headaches because of it...

dont see why bother, I have the m103 and I love it, but because I have it ))
if you are going to swap swap at least to a m104 with hfm or yes the m111
I only want to swap from 4cyl to 6cyl, the two options was putting a m103 or a m104, but I don't know what I really need to get to swap. Wich gearbox, wich ECU etcc... I'm starting from nothing with mercedes.
