My 2002 A160 has progressively developed stiff and lumpy/notchy steering, with a squeak coming from the column. My mechanic tells me I need a new column. I'm wondering if there is a means of lubricating whatever is seizing up?

RHD A-Classes are more affected because of 2 U-joints to route the column to the rack.

First thing you need to do is locate the steering column universal joint under the dash, spray it with grease, and make sure you grease the upper part too, the joint is 2 parts.
