Hi there,

I've spotted a 2002 S63 AMG V12, and I came to know that it's one of the rarest S-Class editions ever, it was only produced for month as some sites claim. I wonder how reliable is this thing, as I presume that it's based on the S 600, but it has revised engine internals, suspension, and a complete new ECU, so how reliable is an S600 to begin with, then compare to this rare beast.

See you later

There is no 2002 S63. S63 was started to produce 2008 in W221 line, as a replacement of S55 in W220. Both are V8.

V12 AMG used in S65 which was introduced 2006 in W220 line.

Check VIN and validate the car, make sure it is not just re-badged.

If you want to understand S600, pls check my threads by click the links in my signature.

Thanks.

For one month in 2001, AMG produced the S63 AMG, which was sold in very limited numbers. The S63 was powered by a 6.3 L 444 hp (331 kW) V12. An undisclosed number of them were sold exclusively through AMG in European and Asian markets.
Thanks , I see it.
It is 6.3L M137 which is a naturally aspireted V12.

Anyway, the pre face lift V12 is less reliable than M275 as I know.

Regards.

Reliability

I ran one in the UK for around 3 years with no serious problems. Bought it at around 28k miles and ran it to around 55k miles. Beautiful car with separate rear seats, heated and cooled seats (all four of them), grey nappa leather and designio wood, Bose 12 speaker system etc, silver body. Only slight problem was tyre pressure sensors kept failing and then overrode the in car displays and phone! Did take the fax machine out but otherwise as I bought it from the dealer (Southampton - they claimed it was ex MB UK MD's car). Because it is so rare it was registered as an S600 for vehicle registration purposes.

It's in store now as I am based in Oman for work and it is a UK version. If anyone is seriously interested I am persuadable for the right price!

That is an ultra rare find. Keeping up with the maintenance for a V12 on a Mercedes Benz can be horrendous but when the car is running properly it is amazing. If I was in your position I would buy it but only if there are not major problems ready to surface. Just changing spark plugs and coils on the car will be outrageous in price. 2 plugs per cylinder and 12 cylinders can add up quickly. Not to mention all the additional options on the car that can go bad. If you do buy it, I would recommend a full scale maintenance job to prevent problems. Replace the airmatic relay, flush and change the brake fluid, change the brake pads and rotors if needed, change the power steering fluid and add lexzoil if the steering is noisy, change the spark plugs and coils, change the oil and oil filter, flush and change the transmission fluid as well as the O rings for the plug, change the transmission fluid filter, change the fuel filter and run some sea foam through the car, check all the fuses and make sure none are missing, blown, or misplaced, change the serpentine belt and pulley, change the engine air intake filters, change the cabin filters, change the charcoal filters, change the wipers if needed, check and clear all the drains under the hood, check the moonroof drains, check the COMAND to make sure the boot loader is good, replace the top seals of the airmatic struts using the MB repair kit and the special tools, make sure the tires on the car are of the proper speed rating, and make sure all the soft close doors work and if not determine if its the pump or actuator(s), grease your moonroof rails, check the ball joints. There might be a few things I am forgetting but if you follow those the car should be in good health but you never know what can sprout up. The multifunction display will probably go bad if it hasn't been replaced yet.

I think, as it is an early AMG, that the vast majority of the parts are as per the S600, though the engine was hand bored, so I just hope that the exclusive AMG parts don't need replacing for some time. Look forward to driving it again when I go back to UK in a few years. Wish I could import it here to Oman, but can't because the wheel is on the wrong side and that is illegal in Oman (so I believe). Consequently have to put up with my Toyota Landcruiser - ok but boring compared with an S63!!!

Just found in a house move my original brochure for the W220 V12 444bhp S63 AMG, 1 of 70 made, must be very rare as a brochure if anyone likes these

Most do not know this exists. never officially advertised, special order only, apparently €272,000!!!

Only 70 were made globally as a tribute to the 300SEL 6.3/6.8 AMG Red Pig/Rote Sau.

Do not confuse this with the common and mass produced S63 V8 engine series that came later, this was a car AMG made to special order like the SL73 AMG R129, S73 AMG W140 Saloon & Estate, similar CL63 AMG V12 C215 (26 made), W202 C55 AMG, G63 V12 (same engine as this)

For only one month in 2001, AMG created a V12-powered S-Class solely for certain European and Asian markets, presumably for those select potentates and dictators who could hardly endure the shame of being driven around on only 8-cylinders. 4 pots and nearly 100hp separate the S63 AMG from the S55, even though the stopwatch shows only a few tenths advantage for the heavier car.

Based on the 5.8L V12 used in the S600 and CL600, the S63's engine has a larger displacement, a new management system, a new crank case and cooling system, weight-optimized pistons, and a new camshaft with greater valve lift and modified valves.
390lb-ft of torque are available between 2500-5800rpm with a peak of 457 at 4400 rpm while horsepower grows by almost 80 over the S600.

Hi,

Nice brochure, rare artifact :)

444 bhp sounds very conservative to me considering an M113 55 Kompressor bashes out over 500 with a huge flat torque curve ....................

I wonder if it was under quoted for Insurance and other political reasons ????????????

:dunno:
Non Supercharged M113 V8 is 340-370bhp according to Wiki though, this is a non supercharged V12 here

The M113 5.4L is a 5.4 L (5,439 cc) version with the same 97 mm (3.82 in) bore as the M113 5.0 but with a longer 92 mm (3.62 in) stroke developed by Mercedes-AMG. These cars were the first to carry the 55 AMG title. Power output is 342 to 362 hp (347 to 367 PS; 255 to 270 kW) at 5,500 rpm with 510 to 530 N⋅m (376 to 391 lb⋅ft) of torque at 2,800–5,400 rpm. Many popular tuners such as Kleemann USA, Amg Affalterbach developed supercharger systems for this model, mirroring the later M113K design. 396 hp (401 PS; 295 kW) at 5,750 rpm and 520 N⋅m (384 lb⋅ft) at 3,750 rpm of torque in the SLK55 AMG Black Series.
