Hi all…. New to the forum and just a quick thanks and appreciation for the extremely useful wisdom of the site..! Felt ignorant making use of all the knowledge and not becoming a member so joined…. And now have a reason to seek help!

My dashboard illumination has stopped working. I have searched the forums extensively and can see it’s quite a common problem though often solutions aren’t always posted. As advised I’ve double check the corresponding fuses with a multimeter but all seems fine there. There was mention of a fuse behind the instrument cluster but mine doesn’t seem to have that (1999 CLK w208 conv.) the plug connections all look good with no signs of melting or dirty connections and I’ve worn away my finger prints twisting and trying the dimmer switch. Could there be a fuse I’m overlooking or some other avenue to investigate? The car came with an aftermarket stereo fitted and having investigated behind there I’ve notice the wires to the cigarette lighter bulb (god only knows why) have been snipped and taped up so aren’t connected. All the instrument dials work, headlight switch still illuminates; just no illumination to instrument or centre console. Everything else seems to work fine.

Otherwise I absolutely love my CLK. Despite the spooky night driving with no dash lights. I do need to find a careful way of removing the pretend AMG badge the previous owner has stuck on the back though.

Hopefully someone could point me in the right direction.

Never mind…. I decided to be brave and use some common sense (which seems to be considered a super power these days)… I connected the wires back up to the cigarette lighter illumination and voila..!! Solved!! Must have left an open circuit with it disconnected and made it unhappy.

Glad you solved your problem.

My current CLK is my second one, and I've found most problems occur from non OE equipment fitted. Either badly fitted or just faulty.

My first car had an after market CD player which caused a drain on the battery. Lots of head scratching before I isolated the problem.
