S500 Poly (Serpentine) Belt Change

Just changed the poly (aka serpentine) belt on my '98 S500. Very easy once I had done it once. I have the third type of tensioner. The manual directions included loosening the fan ring which was a useless step and took much time and fiddling around to get the mating posts re-engaged. Next time I would just leave the fan ring in place. It also requires an E-10 torx socket to release the pressure on the tensioner. The torx socket is only used to rotate the tensioner towards the center of the engine and then the belt is easily slipped off. The socket is not used to unscrew the torx bolt but just used to move the tensioner to release the tension.

This should be a real money maker for shops as the book rate is listed as 0.6 hours where it could easily be done in 15 minutes once you have done it before.

Alldatadiy.com has all of the instructions.

FYI - In the Star Classic manual - this is called the AC compressor belt.

With the tensioner, I didn't really worry about or check the belt play. It seemed appropriately tight and there is no adjustment to deal with as the M119 belt tensioner is spring loaded. I'm not sure if the M104 system is different. I'm sure there are others on the forum that could give you some more relevant detail.

While you're there dmac, can you do me a favour? You have a 98 with a 119 so your car should be very similar to mine. Your engine bay should look thus;

With your MAF positioned somewhere inside the Vee, (between labels 3 and 2). Tell me, if you switch the ignition on, (turn off blower motor, stereo and such), can you hear the MAF buzzing?
Kind of like a louder version of the interior blower aspirator in the headlining but at about 3 times the volume.

AFAIK, this is normal sound for the ETA, with ignition on and un-started motor.
The ETA tries to reset the butterfly valve, and explore its extreme positions.

Mine does it too, but it is most hear-able when filter case is off.

Mine does it for as long as the ignition is on. I have cutting out issues at the moment. Now that I've had a look, can see the wiring is all brittle. Got the MAF off and gave it a good clean. I'll put the whole lot back together later and see what gives.
Never noticed that it was always on before.
By the way does anybody know where the oil temp sensor is located?

belt size

Hi, sorry to reopen an old thread

I have been trying to fit a 1992 500se belt and it doesn't fit. First belt was a 8pk2465 specified by the parts shop. This was too wide and seemed short.

Reading the manual it said 2460mm so I ordered a 6pk2460. This is the right width but still seems short, as I can't get it on even with the tensioner full loosened.

Have I got the correct part number or have I bought a dodgy part?
