Hi folks,

Yesterday I got a red message on my dashboard "Reduce oil level". I`m was driving on the highway at 70mph when this message appears on my dashboard. This message will not appear when I`m driving in the city and less than 60mph. I`m was very curious about this issue and I checked for oil level on the dashboard because my car doesn`t have deep stick. You can see from the picture that the oil level is 9.4l. I bought this car 2 days before so I didn`t change any oil and filter, to be honest. But for a 320CDI 6 inline 9.4l engine oil I think is too much. Any suggestion??

I suggest you reduce oil level!!!

If you just bought the car, change the oil + filter and refill with correct amount. Consult your owners manual what that is but I'm pretty sure it's Not 9.4 L for 320 CDI. BTW: that instrument cluster reading should be ~ 0.3 L less than specified oil capacity, when oil is hot and car on level ground.

You need to avoid driving the car and change the oil asap , as per photodude refill with the correct amount which is 7.5l.. too much oil can cause damage.
Measure it out carefully to get the right amount..
Do not use the dash display to set the level...it tells you the amount in the sump ,,which is less than the amount required to correctly fill after an oil drain and filter change.

The same thing happened to me on my 2005 E320 CDI. I bought it out of state from an independent dealer and started driving it home on the interstate. I got the red overfill warning and had to find the nearest MB dealer. Many non-MB mechanics have no idea how to correctly measure the oil level in these engines since there is not a dipstick. (I have even had MB mechanics overfill it.) To make sure, I bought a dipstick to measure it myself. As Photodude says, you can Google for the manual as well as for a dipstick. Since the dipsticks out there measure in mm, I use the attached oil level chart to see what the measurement should be. It shows how many liters it is over- or under-filled depending upon the measurement. If you are in the US, the commas are periods for us. Hope this helps.

So was your car reporting that you have 9.4 liters of oil in the crankcase? That what it looks like cluster is saying.

That's odd, because mine (in US) is reporting that I have 9.4 quarts in the crankcase and I've been getting the same 'reduce oil level' message.

Starting to wonder if the 9.4 is some sort of default figure for failed level sender.

What was the resolution to your problem? Were you actually over full on oil?

I just checked cold start on ‘05 M112. It took 10sec to drop 0.1qt then less time to drop another 0.1qt, yadda yadda. It took about 60sec overall to drop a full quart. I didn’t wait for steady state. 1500 miles on Mobil1 0W-40, Mann fleece filter, 54F ambient…
